Carb cleaning with Simple Green
« on: April 23, 2014, 07:26:08 PM »
Im,considering cleaning my carbs with true green...can I clean the whole rack by putting it in a container of the stuff? I plan on removing bowls float ect but would like to dip the whole rack in there.

Is that 'True Green' similar to 'Simple green' ? or more powerful ? I'd remove the rubber parts anyway...

From what I recall you have already had them off and on around five or more times?  Might want to consider taking them apart and doing things for the last time.

Last time I saw you had pulled the pilots and had the bike running good again?  Also, how did you resolve the broken off accelerator pump nozzle?

Never heard of True green, if you mean simple green, then it's ok but make sure to use simple green HD (which is actually purple) or else you will discolor (potentially) your carbs.

Simple green yes.

I bought another set of carbs local. Its running alright, been commuting with it until by petcock crapped out. So I have vb one of those and an airbox in the mail, so I thought I was clean the outside as well...

Id read some threads that true green does a nice job cleaning without tarnishing...harrisluv...thoughts were while I couldnt ride anyways I would take them off again, do a deeper cleaning, resolve my accell pump issue then ride again for the rest of the summer :))

Don't use pine sol. It's acidic and will damage your carbs.....

I use simple green diluted to 50% and bring it to a rolling boil on the stove. It totally cleans the funkiest crap right up without needing a prolonged soak. Makes the kitchen smell better than carb cleaner too

take off all the rubber?

I would remove any rubber parts that you think are still salvageable, but most likely you'll be replacing the rubber w/ Honda seal kits? if they're available. I wonder what harisuluv recommends about plastic parts ?

2 years ago I used simple green on SL175 carbs that had been sitiing for 20+ years. Mind you it took a "few" days to soften up the barnacles, but I did get that bike running well. So Simple Green does indeed work well.

+1 to that, I did mine on the bbq in a big enamel canning pot. Those canning pots fit a full rack of carbs and they come with a rack that sits on the bottom of the pot, works wonders, I pull the rack every 20-30 mins and rinse then re dunk till its clean.

I appreciate this post 750K;did you actually bring them to a rolling boil for 20-30 mins. each time ? I hope your wife didn't scalp you for using her canning pot  :o  ::)

I left each carb in for about 10 minutes and cleaned it up after I took it out. Re dipped after cleaning and blowing it out. Takes about an hour of busy work overall, maybe a little more.

Pretty much, it didn't really hit the point of boiling but it was plenty hot enough. I strung some bailing wire from carb no.1 to no.4 to use as a handle I could raise and lower the carb rack without burning my hand.

I made sure it was ok with my wife, haha. She's all for the resurrection of old Japanese motos, these carbs were off the 78 kz1000 I picked up. It hadent run in about 17 years, defeninatly needed a thourogh cleaning.

I've got a gal. of the purple color Simple Green(HD?) but haven't used it on anything yet,is it stronger than the Simple 'Green' standard color ? does it make a green color on your carbs. harisuluv  ???  :o
Hey,is this Simple Green 'heat treatment' lot's better than many cans of Gumout and little brushes and scrapers ?

The simple green works well and isn't toxic like the gumout, a plus. Does plenty of work for you too

I have used most of the degreasers. Purple power works well but I just don't like it, more of a personal thing. They are good degreasers, I prefer how the simple green works. The purple power WILL discolor aluminum fast if left sitting tho

I used the simple green with syringe trick to clean my PD internals and it was slick...only thing it didnt do was choke out my brain cells like the other cleaners :)

Throwing a whole rack of carbs in a boiling pot of Simple Green, rinsing them off with water, re-installing on your bike and expecting them to work, is not going to happen.

No matter what cleaner you prefer to use,  all the ports, passages, jets, etc. need blown out.  Using either carb cleaner and/or compressed air.  Otherwise you've dissolved the gunk with the simple green, but the gunk is still sitting in your carb, until its blown out.

New gaskets and o-rings are also to be used.  *obviously*

Hoping newbies don't read this thread and assume you can dunk a whole rack in some Simple Green and gunked up carbs are magically transformed!!
Come on!  We're burning daylight!
