Just one 3-year old APE stud already totally rusted?!
« on: April 24, 2014, 02:11:29 PM »
Hey folks, got another weird one for ya.

I replaced the cylinder studs in my CB750 F3 about 3 years ago with brand new APE studs. I got new head nuts and copper washers, too.

They all look great...except for this one stud which is already showing heavy rust. The bike's only been ridden for 1000 miles, then stored in a climate and humidity controlled workshop.

Anyone else seen this happen? Is there something special about that one stud?

Nothing special about that one at all. That is one of the 4 studs that are not oil return studs/passages.
These are exposed to the elements between the cylinders.  clean it up and dont let it get in your case or in the oil feed passages nearby.

What flybox says. ^^^

There are ways to deal with it, cyclex offers sleeving of the 4 holes in the head, I put heat shrink tubing over my studs and also used Hondabond to stop the water from entering from the level of head gasket down.

Oh what a great idea!!! Perhaps I can get this sealed before it gets any worse.

flybox1, as for the bottom end, I had to open it up anyway so I've been able to clean out the rust that fell in. And yes, I had the copper crush washer and the o-rings in the right places like a good girl should... O :)

So few of us women on this board, I have to represent when I get the chance :D

I don't know about trying to remove the stud to rust-proof it then put it back in, though. Am thinking maybe some POR on the stud now....

If you didn't (red) loc-tite it, it should come out easily.
IIWM, pull it and clean it up properly.
