Uni Filter 4055 and 550 Breather Pipe
« on: April 26, 2014, 08:54:34 AM »
Question about the new Uni Air Filter I'm installing on 550K1. In the airbox is a breather tube stand pipe. The new Uni Filter has a cutout in the wire mesh for the pipe, but the hole in the foam is about big enough to push a pencil through. The filter instructions say to remove a section of foam here with a "plier tip or tweezer." Thing is, the foam has not been precut for removal. Oh yeah, there was a piece of square red foam in this location. Was that just to call attention? I understand the cb500 didn't have the pipe and this filter is for either model.

Shall I just cut an X in the foam so the pipe can slip though?

Thanks

Did they change the design?  My older unopened one out in the garage has a piece of red foam where the pipe goes.  You just pull that out for the CB550 use.

TT,
I removed the small red piece and there was just a tiny hole below it. Like I said, about the size a pencil would pass through. No way the breather stand pipe will pass through it. Should I just make an opening to allow the pipe to push through without distorting the shape of the foam/wire screen?
Thanks

On all of mine I just used the breather tube to make the holes bigger in the filter for a nice tight fit.  You can do a test fit with both the filter and the tube out of the bike.  That way, you can see the the proper progress and hold the screen in place by looking into the filter outlet.  Once the you've pioneered the way, on bike assembly should go smoothly.

Is your screen opening only 1/4"?  That will need enlarging for sure.  But, the foam should be compliant enough not to require tools.  I like that it fits tightly so there is no unfiltered air bypass.

The screen opening is about an inch. The foam is about 1/4". Thanks for the tip on using the pipe as a punch to cut the foam.
