Setting my valves just now and I am scratching my head on something. Here's my Honda shop manual, on setting clearances for the first set - the "O" valves:

Then it says, rotate the crank 360 degrees and set it on the very same mark and adjust the "X" valves:

Is this correct? I'd have thought i'd set TDC for the 2-3 cyls for this second set.

Lil help please, I am in the middle of this...

Its ages since ive done it, but i followed my own way by rotating to the t mark, wiggle the tappets to see which set are for adjusting (valve closed) then rotate 360 and do the other set. Bear in mind that the cam rotates 180 degrees every 360 of the crank. I see how the manual seems confusing..

Set on 1/4, rotate 360 and set on 1/4.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Every Honda I've ever owned has been .002 in and .003 ex. From 50's to 750's. I have never seen a motor with an intake measurement more than an exhaust measurement. I've seen some the same, and most where intake is less, but NEVER seen one where the intake was more. Think about this logically, the exhaust valve WILL run hotter and expand more, necessitating a little more clearance.

As for adjustment, and I've done this on just about every bike I own and it has worked for 40+ years. I just watch the valves and after the exhaust cycles and the cam lobes are away from the rockers, I check and adjust. Some of you may cringe but you are on the heal of the cam with the rocker and that's where you need to be. I don't worry about lining marks up perfectly etc. Just watch the valves. Works on my Honda's, Yams, Triumphs, Nortons, Guzzis, Ducati, etc. etc. etc.

Basically, don't over think it too much, understand the theory and watch the mechanicals work, it makes sense.
