Pamco no fire on 2-3 77 750k
« on: May 05, 2014, 07:20:41 PM »
Hi,

So my bike was running pretty well last week, so i decided to do some work.

Pamco Ultimate Kit
Oil and filter change
Alternator rewire (was messy and routed incorrectly)

Everything seemed to go well, didn't do any testing through the process as I have had most of this stuff apart in the past.

positive wires from the Pamco are bonded together and soldered into the rear brake bullet as suggested in the instructions.
negative wires are crimped/soldered/heatshrunk into a ring terminal and bolted to the same connection as The battery main ground/reg/rec ground point on a engine mount bolt.
coil connections reused the original bullets at the Pamco end, soldered to the lead wires
coil end used new soldered crimps.

So after all the wiring was done I went to fire it up and it fired easy (after kicking up some pressure)
Didn't sound great and appeared as though there was no spark on 2-3.
To check that the wiring/coils/wires were good i swapped the plug wires and the leads plugged in from the the ignition. Same result, only firing on 1-4. Therefore both the coils should be good, all the plug wires and
Runs exactly the same with 2-3 wires unplugged.

Gonna pick up a set of new plugs tomorrow. Beyond plugs I really have no ideas left, other than an issue with the unit. I guess i will pick up a test light/MM too, all my tools are in my other garage...

Any input would be helpful, will replace plugs, check for + at 2-3 on Pamco, and continuity on negative (I can't imagine that there is an issue there, I have some experience soldering.)

Is there any chance I have the rotor in the wrong position? I tried hooking up the leads in reverse and got a backfire, so i switched them back.

Oh and BTW the reason I haven't swapped/inspected the plugs yet is because there is alot of dirt on my bike from driving this spring and I wanted to take it to the carwash before the plugs come out...

On a side note: Pamco doesn't come pre-wired and it doesn't come with metric bullets either, so buy some. kindof small wire for wiring too which makes it a bit of a pain, would have been nice if the +/- wires had been jumpered together so that there were only 4 wires to deal with, as the stock grommet doesn't work. I guess I will have to drill out the hole and rewire in the future...

Wordy as always, and thanks in advance for any advice!

Jon

As a test, you could try swapping plug wires 1-4 with 2-3 leaving the primary wiring as is then re install the rotor 180 degrees out. If the problem moves to 1-4, then there is a problem with the PAMCO itself.

OK I was jumping the gun, plug swap seems to have fixed it... Maybe because my old setup had resistor plugs? No idea, running well so far, thanks Pete
