ca 77 Dream questions
« on: April 27, 2014, 08:32:54 AM »
I know this sounds like a stupid question, I bought some clymer books for the wiring diagram, but they didn't come in for the dream but they do cover everything else in 250 -350 , but I'm pressed for time and can't find the answer.
Problem: Turn key one click up....engine runs but no lights
Turn key 2 clicks up..... have lights not sure if engine runs in this mode.
The engine is apart right now so I don't know if these bikes operate normally with lights  and engine running on 2nd click or is this the parking light mode such as the 550 and 750 have?
This machine was drowned once and I'm cleaning every bit of it , owner said that his starter suddenly stopped working... cleaned the button ...no help
Got new battery....checked fuse....no help
post to post solenoid jump... intermittent starter...so starter works
Black wire and YR wire are both hot when they leave the solenoid ... lights up the tester
So I know it runs on 1st click
I can get power to lighting on 2nd click
 I have starter sometimes
I'm wondering if I just don't know what position to run the key during operation or
The ignition switch and solenoid  might need replace
 any thoughts?

Another question: Has anyone switched that crappy throttle system to a modern on the bar setup?
I'm tempted to do it for safety's sake, there's just too many moving parts that could jamb a throttle wfo if warn and cocked.
Besides what I figure  to be safer, those crappy hard plastic grips could be changed out to something a bit more comfortable .
I'n not a big fan of shedding original parts, but for crying out loud , this machine needs improvement.
Take that upper and lower chain guard for instance, cool looking , keeps body parts out of the chain, But if you are the guy that takes one off, be freakin careful, there is an extra raised radius that is  on the inside rear hub maybe 3/4 of an inch from the rear sprocket, that is meant to keep the 2 piece chainguard in line.
Well, it wears on the rotating hub and makes itself sharper than any kitchen knife you'll ever see. Another sh1t design that can be changed or deleted.
Has anyone else made any of these changes?

from the owners manual

1 click up for daylight driving- blinkers, horn, starter motor and stop lights available
2 clicks up for twilight driving-additional use of the parking light to above
3 clicks up for night time driving-additional use of headlight and tail light to above
4 clicks up for parking at night time-tail light is available, key can be removed

in addition 1 click down operates the starter motor only and it wont start.
this is the 1st step to starting these bikes from cold, not needed when warm, according to the manual.
with my bike its true..

I've had quite a few of these types of throttles on C/CA95, CD175 C/CA77, Colleda. Never had a problem with any of them sticking. Maintained properly they should work just fine. Only problem is the amount of twisting going from nil to full on but that's not restricted to this throttle type. Perhaps you could get hold of a throttle from a CB72/77. Or any of the later 'normal' Honda types.

Thanks ken65, there's just allot of places to stop the key, now I know when and why.

Krusty, Perhaps I won't change to a modern set up if there's been no problems, it just looks capable of being a problem. And you're right about the amount of twisting needed to get it wide open, shoot ,if you want wide open without letting go of it , better have short arms or you could have an elbow  in the front spokes.

Found a decent wiring diagram and checked it out, looks dirty but good, a bit of cleaning should take care of the harness. The solenoid that I thought could be the issue, maybe not just that, jumped the posts and the connection on the starter lit the tester up, so it was getting juice to it. Took the starter out , it has a very stiff spot in it when turned by hand. Intermittent starter was harder to pin down than a dead one.  Sending it out for rebuild. Thanks for the help.

Maybe you already have found one, but here's a copy from the Owner's Manual of the wiring diagram for the C72/C77 model.  This one has the winkers unlike the American version CA72/CA77.

Also, you were asking about the key switch positions.  Also found this info in the Owner's Manual.
