Urgency of a headgasket job....
« on: September 16, 2006, 04:11:30 AM »
So, my 82 CB650 is starting to leak oil out the side. It's nothing serious, but it's there. I am going to fix it, it's just that I want to wait until the off season so i can do a bunch more stuff to it. At what point should I discontinue riding it? I'll post pics later...

When you can't afford to buy new jeans after the oil ruins the ones you have.

Seriously, you can ride it as long as you have compression. Ride it until the off season or until it stops running, whichever comes first. Buy a compression tester, if you want, to monitor the situation.

I'm with Bistromath, have a dedicated pair of bike jeans, keep the oil topped up and pull the head and jugs off at your leisure.

Cool. that's what I was hoping. I've only put 125 miles on it since i bought it, and it's gone through about a quart of oil...

Uh, that seems like a lot, unless the bike idled for hours and hours.  Sure you used that much oil, and that it isn't leaking out the bottom end anywhere?

Did a quart leak out, or is it burning it?  I was going to suggest retorquing the head, but a quart in 125 miles is a lot.

mine had a slow oil leak that steadily got worse and was more of an annoyance then anything else.

I just pulled it apart and replaced it this weekend and it seems to be doing better.  And to tell you the truth it was one of the easier and less time consuming jobs i've done
1982 cb650sc nighthawk.  the work never stops.

When I was putting off changing my top end gaskets I got by for a while with the "white trash" gasket where I wrapped some fibrous rope around the cylinders where the oil was leaking.

Eventually the rope will become saturated with oil and start wrecking your pants again, but it takes a while and you can just change the rope when this happens.

"Houston I think we have a problem..."
IF it is really leaking that while running I believe y;ou may have more than
a mere gasket leak.
Could be one of them plots from Exxon/Mobil/Shell to get you to buy more oil.
Check it out dude.
Personaly, I would be very conserned about this much leakage and check out right off.
peace,
michel

no, it's not leaking that much. It is burning it too.....  >:(
the bike only has 18k on it. could the rings be bad already?
and I exagerated a little. It was only half a quart. and, I never checked it after I did an oil change.
