Which way does the oil filter housing go on?
« on: September 16, 2006, 07:55:47 PM »
I'm confused as to which side is up on the filter housing itself, and then the housing piece which goes between the piece which holds the oil filter and the actual engine. Can anyone enlighten me with a detailed description or a nice picture?

This'll teach me to pay more attention when I'm taking things off for the first time!  Also, since both of these "housings" have large o-rings, and the filter kit only came with one, would it have been better to replace the one which goes against the engine, or the one in the primary housing which fits against the smaller housing? Neither were leaking at all before.

The longer fins go up. I would replace the filter between the housing and the engine.

OK. Mine has an extra piece that isn't shown in any of the pictures I've seen so far though. It's a completely seperate piece which goes between that filter housing and the engine, has fins, and has a sort of bushing to keep it centered on the oil bolt. Was that a special 'F' engine thing or something?

Sounds like an oil cooler adapter. Got a pic?

Ahhh, the two piece 77-78 750F sandwich :D    The longer fins of the cooling plate point down. If memory serves there is a locator tab at the top of the filter housing which fits between two tabs on the cooling fin back plate. I replaced the O-ring between the filter housing and cooling plate the first time and made sure to have two O-rings at the next oil change. I have re-used these large O-rings before and didn't have any problems with leaking. Just make sure everything is clean and that no engine grit has made it's way on to the mating surfaces.

Oops, my bad, I just peeked in the garage and the long fins point down. There are two locating tabs on the engine that the cooling plate slots into and two tabs on the cooling plate that the filter housing slots into. Changing my above post to read "large fins down".

#$%*. I've got the long fins of the cooling plate pointing the correct direction (because they have too in order to fit), down, but the long fins of the oil filter housing pointing up. Is this alright until the next oil change? I really would rather not drain all the new oil out of the oil filter housing again.

I'm sure it's allright and may even be correct. Mine has been disassembled for a long time and I was just looking at the pieces. The long fins on the cooler plate need to point down and that is what got me to change my post. Theres nothing in the filter housing that will be affected by mounting in either direction.
