commuter bag for 750K
« on: September 16, 2006, 03:57:52 PM »
I'm looking for a tail bag for my 78 750K. One that will hold a laptop and papers, and a gallon of milk, or whatever i might have to pick up on the way home. It needs to be waterproof as I'm in the rainy Northwest. Also I'm looking for a good guide on how to maintain this bike and I need real basic info as I'm new to motorcycles and as my user name suggests, not very mechanical.

Believe it or not, I strap a milkcrate to the rear seat when the wife/kids call for
food from the store.

Basic upkeep: I use furniture polish (liquid gold) on everything except tires and rubber/plastics.
Keep the chain lubed with 80w90 weight gear oil (cheaper than stuff you buy at mc dealers).

Every 30 seconds check rear mirrors for blue lights. ;D
welcome and good luck.
I am sure others have differing opinions....

Go to the Aerostich website. I think it's riderwearhouse.com. They have a whole range of over-the-shoulder commuter bags, designed for exactly your purpose.

The only hard item you listed to fit in a bag is a latop. I know as My laptop is pretty average size and the bags are big and it just does not fit.  >:( Let me know if you find one that will fit that stuff.

Me too. Bungy net and old sports bag has been what I used for my luggage all through the summer. Just stuck in on the seat behind me. Also used a tank bag for the tools, waterproofs, sunglasse etc.

The simplest solutions are often the most effective.

Someone....(I can't remember who)... makes a magnetic tank bag. A friend uses one on his GSXR. Looks weird, but works

Thanks for the input on the bag. A backpack is exactly what I've been using. It gets a bit bulky, especially if I'm wearing a protective type jacket and I've wanted to add reflective vest. Also with the back pack I feel a bit top heavy if I have a gallon of milk or a six-pack in it. The Aerostitch shoulder bag looks pretty good and comes in a bright yellow, that could add to visibility, a bit pricey.I also found some pretty good looking sissy bar bags on eBay, Kayukon, or something like that. Anyway, I'll just stick with the backpack until I come up with something better.

How about a good maintenance guide? I need guidance on even the most basic stuff. I'll post an inquiry about this on the tech forum.

Thanks again, especially for ideas about keeping it simple.

I would get a Clymer and Haynes. Both have their strong points. What you can't find in one you should be able to find the other. The Honda factory book works best, if you can find one.

I have the same issue - I'm tired of bungee-ing my briefcase w/laptop on the luggage rack.  Yes, I'm lazy.

I saw these in the latest JC Whitney catalouge: http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/tf-Browse/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2002510/p-2002510/N-111+10211+600014603/c-10111

The catalouge shows a bit different case, and two sizes: $59.99 17-1/2"x15"x11" or $79.99 22-1/2"x16-1/2"x11".  Both use the same easy-on-off mounting plate, pop it off and away you go. Yes, I think it would be fugly, but it seems to be an easy way to go.
