Darn'st thing I've ever seen.
« on: September 15, 2006, 05:53:15 PM »
I certainly am not going to act like I am some sort of pro builder or an ex-racer in my golden years but......I have spent a wee bit of time around combustion engines but most of them were cars. About 3 years ago I got into bikes. ( I've ridden them for a while but when it came to trying to understand more than the basics of what I owned I left that to a buddy of mine who kept them tuned and smooth.) Anyway....I recently had an issue with spark, or the lack of it on cylinders 2&3. Several good suggestions were given to me on this board after I had exhausted all attempts at fixing the issue. Still no luck.

Well..........This next part is probably a rookie mistake and you won't be shocked by it but I decided to take a closer look at the points and lo and behold the points on 2&3 are like a bowl. Now some of  you may say I should have noticed this and probably I should have but they are an honest to goodness bowl. I have seen points pitted before but this thing is so convex in it's shape I was amazed. Anyway, long story longer. Quick replacement of said points ( actually I replaced the entire set-up condensers and all.) and we are firing on all fours.
The sun is going to shine on my part of Pennsylvania Saturday so I'm going riding.

Nite all.

I believe that it doesn't matter how much experience you have you can always overlook something, which in hindsight should have been obvious. Like leaving the sump drain plug out while you are trying to fill up the motor with fresh oil.....

What he said! I dare say that you probably won't find anyone here who hasn't clearly overlooked the obvious. It can happen to anybody. Thing is YOU found it and took care of it. Congrats to you.

Or spending 5 months rebuilding a bike and when you get to the final day ....the gas part, you forget to push the fuel line on the carbs and you left the valve open!

Good to hear you got it figured.
Have a great ride......and take a couple of tools along with you ;D
