K2/K5 Drag project
« on: May 04, 2014, 02:19:28 PM »
This is where it all begins,

For the past week and a half I have been racking my brain and enjoying many sleepless nights! I have a lot to get done in less than 4 months..

So this is the start, to a rebuild of a classic Bonneville Racer.. So far I have got all my parts and pieces off to powder coat and I have been focusing on rebuilding two motors.. The first one was bored to 64.3mm per piston, running Golden rods and a Rc machined crank, new primary and cam chains..I noticed the pistons on this motor were dome shaped, so assuming higher compression im going to need help to dial this in with a Turbo.

The second motor I am building, Is similar to the first.. Except it is using 72.8mm pistons with a perfect flat top (ideal for the turbo)

I have 4 different cams to chose from, though I chose to rebuild the motors with the Cams they originally had to start off with.

So the first battle is getting an adapter plate and oil lines for the cooler

My other battle right now is trying to figure out what they ran off of the crank on the Alternator side, the rotor and stator have been removed and a machined plate was made to replace it, it looks like this plate met up with something mounted in the starter motor location( see pictures below) my guess was maybe a Fuel pump?(as im not sure how the Hilborn is fed fuel!)

Here's the start to a million questions! Thanks a bunch fellas!!

Happy riding!

I have also chosen to use the ARD magneto for this build, to eliminate the need for the stator, rotor, and battery..

Here's some pictures of the Hilborn set up, I have no idea how this thing works..

Hilborns, ...WFO!  ;D
They were driving something, Drouin's mounted on left side. Do they have kick starters? May have used outboard starters.
What are the cams marked?
Adapter plate I have, Kenny (CycleX) has adapters etc. just got a remote oil filter adapter with nice braided lines using Fram car filter. Is available! ;D
Probably try to call you @10:00 EST. ;D Bill

Yeah, kick starter is there.. They all seem to be set up for kick only with the starter motor gears removed and the hole filled.

Here's a picture of the bike in action, at the flats back in 74' - http://americaneagleracingteam.com/images/kevin-bike-lg.jpg

Notice the belt off the crank.

Any ideas how the Hilborn Injection works? I see how the throttle cable  works, not sure what the three attachments are on the top corner of the intake manifold go to..

Trey..........welcome to the salt.............its addictive ;D ;D ;D

I'm building to run at BUB / AMA in the Modified Classic Gas category.

You have certainly found a pile of parts...................and I think you will get a lot of help from this board to get it running 8)

If you enter the Classic category.............you have open records to set. :) :) :)

Before you get too far...........check for available tires to fit your choice of wheels.  They must be speed-rated to exceed any existing record.  If no record exists........H-rated will do to set a record..............but you will have to upgrade to try again if your speed is over 130-mph.

I'm sure we will be reading each other's mail................hope to see you at the 0 (starting line) on the Mountain Course...........if your successful, they may move you over to the International............

Thanks Dennis, I have a feeling we are going to become good friends after this is all said and done  :)

I haven't figured out what meet to join yet, When is the cut off for registration?

I actually need help in locating high speed rated tires, running a stock cb750 front wheel and a aftermarket (3.50x18) rear wheel.. would love to get the highest rated tires I can.

You may have to change to an 18 front to get better speed rated tires Trey, lots made for classic racing in 18 inch sizes...  Just a thought...

From the picture of the bike that plate looks to have been supporting the mechanical fuel pump, and it's drive.  The short inlet hose to the distribution block would fit well setup like that.

Tires............V-Rated is maxed at 149.............

W-Rated is maxed at 168........

Z-Rated is above 168 and may be shaved to save weight when you know your running above 168-mph.

I have Bridgestone Battlax BT-023 110/80ZR-18 on the rear and a BS Battlax T-30 110/80 ZR-19 on the front.  I bought them through Amazon.com for the best price.......two different vendors.  The front is a W-rated tire on the order but came with the Z-rating on the sidewall.  I think the difference between the BT-023 and the BT-T30 is a vary slight change to the tread design. I am running a 2.5-rear rim and a 1.85-front.

        ;) ;D

You would not need the electric fuel pump setup or the float bowl setup on the fuel tank. Just run a fuel line from the tank to the inlet side of the mechanical fuel pump. Call Hilborn for tech advice.   ;)

Any theories or "hard evidence" of tire width affecting handling or stability at higher speeds?

Sure, gotta have some contact patch, but too big, fend feel heavy, more wind resistance, small tire like a broom handle, big tire a 2x4! My first thoughts, Bill You up late!  ;D

No tail light allowed on the salt............it's a safety thing.........something about saving the family jewels.  Match the battery amperage to the ignition system........most stuff will require an 8-amp battery.  I carry a spare and take both batteries to the hotel for overnight trickle-charges.

Tires.........minimal contact patch on the front for least resistance...............Fat tires actually create lift...........think about it..........only the center area is in touch with earth when your going FAST ;D ;D ;D

Yes, some amount of tire slippage is noted on the most powerful bikes..............the key word is powerful ;) ;) ;)  That usually means they should change to a smaller rear sprocket :o :o and go FASTER 8) 8) 8)

One of the best overall builders on the salt is Tom Mellor.  He runs a Triumph Trident at 200mph :) :) :)  Google his facebook and you-tube space for a good look at his 'skinny' tires.

So I have a rear wheel, I thought It was off a cb550, but the Axle I have fits it.. It has a much smaller(32) sprocket on the rear and I have a choice of front's.

I also have a much larger rear sprocket(43) ...

So what are the best options for land speed? Small front and back? small back larger front?

Some of your sprockets look like 630, the rest 530.
Measure the rim width where the bead sits.
You have the drive for the Hilborn,, might need. Belt and pulleys.. And of course the pump...
