Thanks for the compliments guys! Mick, I was originally going to do all the fins but thought that this looked cool and was just enough to break the color up without getting too busy looking. I'll try doing a photoshop of all the fins and see if that changes my mind.

I think I've got the engine just about ready to go back in the frame, just have to swap out some oil seals. I did the clutch cover's today when I installed it. I put in some fresh gaskets and the new hardware today. Check it out.

I don't know if it was because of the aftermarket tappet covers or what but the front four tappet covers wouldn't screw down with the larger allen bolt head there instead of just a screw. I had to grind all of them down slightly to get the clearance. Just an fyi for anyone else who replaces their hardware, everything else fit fine.

EDIT: I ground the tappets, not the bolts. Just to clarify.

Started working on the tank today. Like most of the parts that came on this bike the tank was pretty trashed, so I got this one a few months back from someone on the forum, it's off a '74 CB550. This tank photographed much better than it actually looked. It was in good shape for being 40 years old, but definitely needs a paint job and a little body work.

I'm never sanding a tank again. This was probably less than a minute after spraying the paint stripper.

This took probably only 20-30 mins of work. I used Tal Strip aerosol paint stripper, I bought this a while back for a different project but never used it, unfortunately I think it's since been discontinued.

I just have to fix ta couple minor dents and then I can move on to primer.

While your age it stripped, check for leaks from behind the badge clips, or pinch welds. Better now than later. And perform any de-rusting and lining now before paint.

Checked for leaks and everything looks good. The inside of the tank isn't too bad, just some light surface rust just from not being used. I've had bad luck applying tank liners in the past so I'm just going to leave this bare. Got all the body work done over the past week and finished it off today with primer. Now to move on to paint.

Thanks! I did the black on the sides of the tank yesterday, it came out really good. I'm waiting a few days to be able to confidently tape over the black and paint the color. I've got reproduction decals to go over it so if there's any paint seam it'll get hidden.

Duplicolor: Medium Quasar Blue Metallic. I'm going to give this a few days to gas out, then I'm going to add the pin-striping decal, then give it a few more days. So far the weather forecast looks good for next weekend but a lot can change in a week. I've got Spraymax 2k High Gloss for the clear so let's hope the weather holds out. There won't be many more warm weekends left.

Two-tone paint is a pain in the ass but I'm really happy with how this came out. I can't wait to see how this looks with the clear on it.

Thanks for all the compliments! I like doing as much as the work myself, even if a professional paint job would be cleaner, DIY is just more rewarding sometimes.

Resto Fan, the primer is Duplicolor Automotive Series filler primer.

I was going to reuse the original latch and gas cap since they were in pretty good shape but the latch broke when I was taking it off. Oh well, It gave me an excuse to get some new bling for the bike.

Got the engine back in the frame this morning.

My next step is getting the frame off the ground and back on two wheels. I started working on changing the bearings on the rear wheel. Looks like someone's done it before because the retainer has already been drilled out so I got that off. I can't seem to get the bearings to budge at all, though. Any tips on knocking them out?

Hey everyone, sorry for disappearing from the site. Now that Spring is almost here I'm actually able to get back in my garage and get back to work on putting this bike back together. I just ordered some braided brake lines from Slingshot Cycles, a modified speedometer drive from Godffrey, and some extra long bolts to fit my dual disks. I even got some garage time in yesterday and was able to install my new races and bearings in my steering stem.

And just because it looks so cool I'm posting this...
