My spark plug wires were all dry rotted and the spark plug boots kept coming disconnected so it gave me an excuse to pick up these, dynatek 5 ohm coils. I've got a 4 day weekend for July 4th so I'm going to try to jam pack as much garage time in as I can.

I had a somewhat productive day off. First the good. I got the tank and side covers all on the bike with the emblems and everything. Brand new petcock, tank latch and lid. I put the seat on the bike, it all looks great.

The bad, I can't seem to get the carbs tuned right. I set up my carb sync and went to dial everything in, for some reason I can't get the bike to idle without turning the adjustment screw all the way in. If I turn the choke on, even a little bit, it revs right up. I've got brand New carb boots on both sides going to a stock airbox with stock jets to a stock exhaust.

I had the air screw out 1 and 1/8 turn like the manual says, turning it in to about a half turn seems to help it out. It almost seemed like it wasn't getting enough gas. I was running the bike off just some gas line coming from my gas can and had it going to a T junction so maybe it's not getting enough.

I set up the tank and everything after this so next time I'll just run off of that. My brother is pretty good at tuning carbs and has a color tune he's going to bring by later this weekend but until then here are the pictures.

Actually, that's about it. After that I think all I have left is attaching my bar end mirrors and stator cover. Besides that it's just a matter of insurance and registration to get on the road.

But I'm a firm believer in Murphy's Law. "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong." So I'm preparing myself for anything.

Ok, after a week of thunderstorms at night when I got home from work I was finally able to mess with my carbs. I've got the bike idling nicely at about 1100 rpms. I vacuum synced the carbs and have the air screw out about 1 turn.

I can't punch the throttle without it bogging down but I've done some reading and from what I can tell that's just how these carbs are. With mechanical slides and no accelerator pump you can't suddenly go past half total throttle travel without running into problems.

Engine response seems to be fine in this range and has no problems at all with steady acceleration.

Am I right to think this is normal?

Was still having so-so throttle response and wouldn't you know it my inline filter was pinching the gas line and essentially choking off the bike. I know, I've read a bunch of threads with people saying the same exact thing but I thought I could pull it off, I run one on my 750, but the way these carbs are there is just no room for them. I nixed the fuel filters and It's a whole different beast.

I was finally able to confidently take the bike out more than just around the block and man did it feel great. The bike shifts beautifully and rides soooooo smooth. First thing I do when I start working on my 750 again is new bearings everywhere. I love this bike! Handles great in the twists and accelerates great in the straight aways.

I brought a camera along for the ride and snapped some much better quality pictures. Check it out.
You might notice, I switched out the tappet covers to stock ones. Even thought the others were pretty cool looking they prevented me from turning my tank on to reserve, which I thought was kind of a big deal since I ride to work a lot and it's a 30+ mile round trip.

OTP life's been incredibly busy and not much happened on the bike. I still have no power from the starter button to the starter even though shorting the solenoid gets it to spin over.  Exhaust modifications have been finalised, some work on Saturday.

Yea, life can get in the way sometimes. Are you sure your switch is good? I might have some right control parts if you need them, let me know.

Thanks Rafi! I think I'll just stick to enjoying this ride for the rest of the summer before I start turning anymore wrenches. Luckily, when I do get back to it, the 750 is already pretty clean from when I fixed it up a couple years ago. I've put nearly 5000 miles on it since then and it could use a little TLC.

Beautiful job on yours too, can't say it enough!

Just went through that thread too, love that Mustang color!! My K3 got a Mustang color too (GT Race Red directly from Ford).

This is going to be my custom 836 build so I have some creative freedom on that one. Really itching to get to it, BUT, responsibility gets in the way :(

Nice, can't go wrong with those classic Mustang colors, my first bike was Wimbledon White! I was going to keep with tradition for my 500 but that GM blue was too nice to pass up. I just subscribed to your '73 build, can't wait to see where it goes. I know what you mean with responsibility getting in the way. I've got to wait for my wallet to get a little fatter before I can start working on anything else. For now I can enjoy the fruits of my labor.

Not sure if anyone was aware, David Silver Spares is selling HM323 exhaust reproductions for the CB500/CB550 now. I just picked up a #3 pipe to replace my dented/scuffed up one. Quality seems really good, I'll have to get it on the bike in the next few weeks to be ready for spring. I got the heads up from someone on a vintage Japanese motorcycle Facebook group. The guy I talked to had gotten a whole set, looks like pipes #1 and #3 are the only ones they have left in stock.

Pipe #1 link: https://www.davidsilverspares.com/CB500K1-FOUR-1972/part_290680/

Pipe #3 link: https://www.davidsilverspares.com/CB500K1-FOUR-1972/part_290688/

The pipe had a discounted price for a slight imperfection on the back of the header facing the engine. Shouldn't be visible at all when mounted but it's about a 2 inch imperfection in the casting under the chrome.
