gas in oil? ?
« on: September 17, 2006, 08:10:14 AM »
??? Ok..I read here where dripping gas from the carbs can get into the oil.  How?? thru what avenue? ? I don't know much about the bottom innards.  My petcock don't work so well, and at times I have found gas dripping, but I can't tell how much.  How much gas in the oil can damage the motor? how many miles before it will cause some ill effects??

I am not sure, but petcocks are not expensive and alot of them can be rebuilt. You should fix the petcock dripping gas can be dangerous even if it does not make it into your oil.

Fuel getting into the crankcase requires a couple of different problems to add up.  A float float valve or the float itself could be stuck in the open position, or the valve needle isn't seating properly.  For this to cause a problem, either the petcock would have to be left on, or turned off but faulty.

Ordinarily, this would only cause fuel to drain out of your float bowl overflow tubes, but if one or more of them is clogged, the only place for the fuel to go is through the intake ports and down into the cylinders and crankcase, mixing with the oil.
