cb500 no spark, left stranded
« on: May 05, 2014, 03:29:09 PM »
A little about the bike, I'm forever taking 2 steps forward and a step backwards. My own inexperience.   Side note, you guys are amazing.

I was riding my bike around last night with the headlight on and went out on to the highway, go to open up the throttle and its got nothing, took everything to keep it going to the next off ramp and get off the highway. I pull over and realise my choke was shut. I pull and brush all the plugs clean, it starts back up on all 4 cylinders.. I keep riding. It dies again. All the plugs are good this time.. I check the spark at each plug and ive got nothing. Could bump start it either, seemed like the clutch wouldnt catch.   So I'm stranded and push it home 5 km.  Measured the battery and it read 12.3V.
Recharged the battery overnight. Pulled it off this morning to sit all day and it read 12.9 this evening.

My ignition system seems good, i get 13-14V at 3000rpm + (headlight off though...)
My headlight is a ge H5024   42/65W
My ignition is prestolite
My coils are dyna 5ohm
My reg/rec is an electrosport esr240 solidstate (in good order)

I live in the city so the 2 watts over stock on low-beam should be ok as I wont be using the highbeam if at all.
But the increased draw because of the prestolite over points and the nighttime driving lighting seems to be killing the battery slowly. Should I switch to points for less draw to optimize my charging situation ?
