'Ting' sound in '75 400f
« on: April 26, 2014, 10:00:59 PM »
Hi,
I've been working on my 75 400f for a while and starting to get the thing together. I've always noticed a ting-ing sound in the engine that's rev dependent. I thought it might be the cam tensioner, so I adjusted that according to the clymer manual. Then I thought it might be the tappet clearances, so I got the fancy tools and adjusted them too (hopefully). I wouldn't think that this is a normal sound, but I'm not sure what it could be. Any ideas? Pictures added cause I got parts back from the painter and it's purdy.

Not 100% sure if you mean the engine sounds 'tinny' or high pitched or you heard a distinct TING' sound.

I've had two 'tinny' sounding engines that were solved with rebuilding the oil pump. One was a 550 the other a 400F.

With both bikes, after the rebuild the bike was getting better oil distribution and sounded WAY lower and actually purred and growled nicely instead of a high pitched sound.

I'm about to do another pump rebuild, maybe this time I will take some video and post before and after.

I'm not sure exactly what your "ting" sounds like, but an exhaust leak can sound awfully metallic.  Might want to check the torque on your header flanges.

Dang, I moved too fast today. Had to take work some DOHC 750 carbs then raced to get my 400F oil pump off before closing shop. Didn't get a chance to take a before video put will post pics of the oil pump rebuild and video of the bike running.

One of the 400Fs is proving to be quite hilarious. Monday the POs jerry rigged switch caught fire, before I rewired and swore at it. Today the Kerker muffler fell off the back as I was riding up a small ramp.
