oil lines - where to purchase?
« on: September 18, 2006, 07:30:15 AM »
My '69 750 K0 has a pair of sorry-looking, shagged and worn out oil lines from the tank to the crankcase. They weren't leaking when I took them off, but I just can't reuse them as they look pretty bad. Honda apparently cannot supply them as they are listed as obsolete.

A few questions for the group:
1) Is there a source for replacements? I've checked all the usual sources and don't see them listed anywhere.

2) Is it possible to repair them? Can I get a local hydraulic supply company to crimp new hoses on the original fittings?

3) Is there another way?

4) Are the K0 lines different from later bikes?

Yamiya in Japan has them listed on their website:

Wow! 250 bucks! That's more than I paid for the entire bike. There has to be another option.

Cycle Exchange has some options for you as well as a way to spiff up your oiling system:

Carpy sells braided steel oil lines ready to go - kinda pricey but you don't have to assemble them yourself - look much cooler than stock:

Good grief! Those are expensive :o
Perhaps the very last resort if you exhaust all your other options.

I painted the hose sections with Duplicolor Fabric/Vinyl black. They had faded to a silver color in spots but eends were in good shape. It worked well.

Buy a nice set on EBay and if necessay, have the ends hard-chromed and polished. It cost me about $30 total for a pair of good looking lines.

I bought the entire tank and lines for less than $40. The lines could have been used as was. I soaked/washed the lines in Dawn for several hours then sprayed them with ArmorAll for a new, black look.

Good luck with the project.

So from Carpy's site it looks like I can cut the old fittings off and replace with a hose clamp and some braided stainless hose. Looks like I can get the hose and fancy-schmansy clamps at my local race car supply for under $30. (Sorry, Carpy, I'm a cheapskate at heart and want to do this as cheaply as possible.)
Anyone know what AN size hose I'll need? -8?-10?-12?

What a timely topic!  Just yesterday I cut apart some old oil lines I had to see how to make them into stainless braided.  If you like, I can post pics of the pieces once you cut them away from the crimp and hose.  Basically what you have are barbed studs.  I also had some aeroquip hose laying around (I have a race car too!) and an -8 is the perfect size!

They sell the covers for braided line to make it look like they were made with regular fittings, but in fact they are just dummy covers that goes over the hose clamp you use for sealing.  I'm running to the store today to buy them.

I'm having the honda ends chrome plated.  I think it's going to look really trick!

HEL UK also supplies braided oil lines kits (https://sws1.eclipse.net.uk/www.h-e-l.co.uk/oilline/HELOLK08.htm for the CB750 for 40 GBP (approx $75).  You have to like anodized blue and red fittings though...

I had my hydraulics shop crimp new braided stainless steel lines on the old fittings.
Was first planning to use hoseclamps but didn´t like the look...
Came out like this and cost 15$ including parts and labor  :)

This forum never ceases to amaze me. You guys are great!

That's what I'm talkin' about - I wondered if they were some funky metric size. I'll cut my fittings off and get them to a hydraulics shop asap. By the way, your bike looks awesome!

I may do it myself if I strike out at the hydraulics shop. -8 it is! I wonder how many have spent big bucks to replace these when a few dollars will do the trick...

Mine are too far gone to repair. The braided cover is falling off one, and the other isn't much better. I may look for some black braided cloth-covered hose to replicate the stock look. I kinda like the braided stainless hose, though...

Ilbikes
I considered the eBay route, but I'm not totally sure hoses from a later bike will fit (most of the eBay stuff is newer than a K0) and it's always a crap shoot with old parts. If I can get it done with new materials for less than $30, that's what I'm gonna do.

Thanks for the link! I spent a few days in Paris this summer while on vacation. I wished I had a bike vs the rental car. The bikes would lane split and pretty much go everywhere they pleased, while I sat there, gridlocked in the car. So we parked the car and used your excellent Metro to get around.

Thanks for the links! I have bookmarked them for future reference.

Thanks for the praise  :)
Forgot to write that I´m not in the States, but in Sweden....
I believe the hose was half inch, so you should be fine anyway..
