When greasing a swingarm...
« on: May 07, 2014, 08:13:06 AM »
Where will the grease ooze out when "it's full." Mine started coming out between the dust cap and swing arm. I just installed the bronze bushings and packed grease in there so there wasn't much room. I double checked the tightness of the swingarm bolt, and also just checked the lateral movement of the swingarm to make sure it was tight.

I just wanted to make sure this was normal, and if not, where should it be oozing out?

Also, is it too late to drill, tap and install screw in zerks? I assume it's not the best to do while in frame? I can always do this next winter, but probably should have just did it when I did installed the bronze bushings.

I installed zerks with swingarm on the bike, it went well.

The grease coming out is normal, it has no other place to go once the space is full.  The idea is to replace the old(er) grease with new grease, typically you pump till it starts coming out.

Awesome, thanks. Definitely going to do this in the near future.

That's what I figure , I just wasn't quite sure where the normal place it oozed out. I just replaced my bushings so it was full (with new) grease already. I just wanted to make sure it was really full as well as learn to grease it properly to keep it up in the future.

Thanks.

Is it for the long bolt ends?  I have this zerks warehouse from TSC or whatnot with many different zerks in and the only zerk I had a tap for was M6 - so I used that one.

Yeah it's for the zerks on the main bolt (for a 72 750). I guess I can just pull the current press in zerks and measure from there.

I would go by the tap you have on hand, for some reason threads on zerks are odd sizes.

I have both a 1/4" and M6 tap, it's more so the length of the zerk I'm interested in.

Ha, thanks man. I'm just going to pull the old ones and measure up and get the same length. I guess I'm just thinking out loud at this point.

If you (drill and) tap in situ, isn't there a danger of metal chips becoming intimately involved with the bearing surfaces?

So do you just grab the old nipple with pliers or vice grips and twist it out? It would be a pain if the nipple broke off, leaving the base stuck.

The grease nipple stock is threaded. M6x1.0

I went to the auto parts store and bought metric zerks. Threaded right in with a decent enough angle to work

For some reason I thought the stock ones were press in zerks?

Do you have a newer year (I can't see the signatures on my phone) seems like newer ones were threaded, older ones were press in.

And schnell, yeah just vice grips or something similar

Thats wha I did, it came right out. As far as shavings from threading, I consider it minimal.

Still totally good information, last thing we'd want is someone else with a K6 to read this thread and think they can just pull out their threaded zerks.
