I could get used to getting paid in SOHCs
« on: May 05, 2014, 02:10:38 PM »
So, a buddy of mine got an amazing deal on 6 bikes from some old guy's back yard. All but one roll and the engines turn over but the trick was getting them out of there. He offered the 1972 CB500 in exchange for a few hours with my tractor and trailer to haul them all out. Four hours later I am the proud owner of my next project (and a fully functional 5gal compressor I found under some debris).

Yes, one his and hers seat will soon be available in the for sale section. So, keep your eyes peeled. I expect it to get snapped up quickly! ;D

And yes, those are extended forks. I am trading them to a friend for a set of freshly rebuilt, powder coated stock length forks.

The future of this bike is still up in the air. It wi either end up as a Cb650 sleeper cafe or possibly just a good, old fashioned stock-ish cb500. Either way, it's getting deposited into my motorcycle account in the garage until my current CB500 build is finished.

The other bikes were an '83 XS650, two GS450s, a CB200 and a KZ650 with a killer paint job.

Will this be on an episode of Downeast Dickering? Was this an Uncle Henrys find?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Haha! Sadly, no. What you see is all the documentation that this find will get. And, technically, Downeast doesn't start until a few towns over from here. The deal itself was a straight up word of mouth sort of thing. The neighbor called a friend who passed it to a friend who passed it to my friend. Though, I think my friend was reading an Uncle Henry's at the time when the phone rang.

Actually, there will be a bit more coverage of these bikes as the red GS450 is going to be the starting point for a charity bike build off we'll be doing this month. My buddy's cycle shop and another fabrication shop in town are doing a bike build off competition. $1,000 budget, 3 man crew, 30 days to build. At the end winner winners get bragging rights and both bikes will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Wilderness Walk for Warriors here in Maine. I'm hoping to keep a build thread up to date for it.

Lol, the laws was actually In the worst shape of all of them. The engine was seized and the bike was pretty well rusted out. We actually just left it outside with the keys in it hoping that it might drive itself away overnight. :D

Hondaman, you may be onto something here. We should organize our own currency, like bitcoin, and call it $OHC.

Oh, and a minor modification to the list of bikes we got. Those two ended up noting being GS450s. They are both, instead, a 1979 GS425. I had to reread the VIN a few times to make sure I wasn't going crazy. I didn't even know GS425s existed before this.

Ugh, reminds me of a deal that fell through last summer for two CB550's two goldwings a super hawk and another that I cant remember FOR FREE plus extra exhausts (2) for the 550's all in pretty decent shape at the very least.

Well the deal didnt fall through, everything was arranged, just had to be picked up... a time was agreed upon and the 6 bikes were all going to new homes between three people, both cb's destined for my garage...

Yeah! We'll have 9 distinct denominations: CB250F, CB350F, CB400F, CB500F, CB550K, CB550F, CB650F, CB750K, and CB750F.
:D

Maybe we can expand it, like to include the 250-4, 250-6 and 125-4, when we get richer?

I don't consider myself an expert but it appears that your bike is NOT a 500, rather it is a 550. I'd check the serial numbers but the pipes are definitely either a '77 or '78, yet the chrome chain guard came on F models only. Looks like a mix 'n match bike perhaps. Either way, a nice pick up! Congrats!

That's exactly what I thought as well. However, after checking the VINs I found out it's a 1972 CB500 frame with a 1973 CB500 engine and a whole lot of late year 550 parts. Unfortunately, it's all the worst 550 parts in my opinion.
