When I read the story on his passing this morning, I couldn't help but think about how many of us (Canadians and otherwise) grew up on his writing.  A couple of years ago I read Otherwise, his recollections of 1937-1948 and from it I gained a fantastic insight into some of the experiences that shaped him as a person and writer.  He had an incredible life and will surely be missed.

The first time I became aware of his writings was on a sailing trip in about 1986.  We were in company with another boat and while anchored at night I would hear laughter coming from our friend's boat.  He was reading The Boat Who Wouldn't Float , Mowat's story of his experiences buying a leaky old schooner in Newfoundland while drunk on Screech and then attempting to sail it to the Caribbean.  ;D  I have read most of his books since then and he was one of my favorites.  RIP Farley. :'(
