New scam? Sellers beware....
« on: May 08, 2014, 04:30:54 PM »
So, you guys may have noticed I've been selling a few parts lately.

A new member, who shall remain nameless, contacted me about a part. 0 posts, by the way.
Seemed innocent enough, asked a couple questions and I replied with a price.

Here is the response I received:

Awesome, sounds good to me.
I'll be sending them to a friend.

Also, I dont use paypal. But there is a very convenient way for me to send money via email.
No cost on your end, you just receive my email, enter the password, and enter your bank info.
done and easy. does that sound alright?

I responded stating that I prefer Paypal, or will accept a USPS money order and that I will not enter my bank info online.

That was two days ago. Guess what, no more interest in the part!
Coincidence or scam, you decide?

No doubt a scam ! Good decision on your part Steve and thanks for flagging it here. In France we have a CL equivalent, Le Bon Coin, and it is just plagued with fraudsters, these buggers infiltrate everywhere.

As Terry say, be alert, the world needs more lerts.

Scam or not but there is a way of sending money using email.  Not sure if you have this in the US but many banks in Canada and Europe allow for sending money via email.  You receive an email from the buyer with a link.  Open the link, select your bank,  put in your bank info and that's it.  Money gets transferred into your account without fees.  I've been using it for years.

not sure how it works in the US but over here for a couple of years i sold thousands of coins and preferred bank deposit, all you supplied was the acc name and bank , ie westpac then the bsb # and acc# , all they could do was deposit money, no paypal fees and almost instant if they were from the same bank.

As stated, very common way for transferring funds here in Canada.  Many banks offer this type of transfer from your online access, you supply an email and a password and they (the bank) send the recipient an email with a link where they repond to accept the transfer into their account.  The sender is charged a fee (usually $1.00) and the recipient has no fees, with the money being transferred into the account specified.  Only certain banks are acceptable, usually all the major ones here.  You must know when and where you disclose your account information, but if you don't trust any form of on-line banking, then you wouldn't want to use this or paypal.

Email money transfers are very common and have little fees as stated.
Zero personal information is shared with respect to bank accounts, only email addresses are shared.

Having said that, I would be weary of the flakey-ness of the posters responses more than his chosen method of payment.

I use email money transfers all the time, very secure and traceable. About a buck to send.

I can use Interact right from my bank to send and receive money trough email, But i think it's still limited to national users (inside Canada only, not sure though).
Interact is one of the banking machine processing companies up here Steve and included in some bank account packages and has no additional fees on either end.

I trust my bank way more than paypal as I can walk in and see people. ;)

Sounds like it could be a better way to transfer money than paypal.
The lack of posts and like was said about the poster's flaky responses would get my spidey senses tingling.

Gday Ken, Yes, but i've never bought a bike off ebay, i have bought a bike behind ebay's back..? I contact the seller , arrange to meet them and look at the bike and do a deal, I never buy whole bikes off ebay if i can't view them personally, its as simple as that...  Seriously mate, I have had hundreds of transactions now with paypal and no complaints... ;)

Haven't any of you ever had your email hacked..?  You do know what key loggers are.?  I am not paranoid but i NEVER type my bank details online and i have fort knox security on my system, I'm of the old school of never take a risk and never suffer the consequences when it comes to money. I know a couple of very clever computer technicians and you would be surprised just how easy it is to gain access to others computers and info, ask the NSA for instance.... ;D :o

Hate to alarm you Retro, but the presumption of Fort Knox cannot be had if your computer is connected to the internet. Not possible.

Compared to most peoples systems mine is very good, I don't live under the delusion that no one can touch it though {i've seen first hand just how easy it is} , i just don't give them any reason to look and don't put anything thing i don't want touched or known online.
