Sammy Green and the CR750 at Santa Pod Raceway
« on: September 17, 2006, 11:16:51 AM »
The "Thames Valley Chapter" of SOHC4 bimbled up to Santa Pod Raceway in Northamptonshire today. It was a hot and sunny september day (I thought those only occurred in my childhood...)

Here's a pic of Sam with the CR750 - what a lovely piece of kit. And the sound it makes...

I can't be arsed with the picture size limit so the other shots are in the Gallery. Sam and Chris (joint owners) together with Eamon and Jim.

http://www.sohc4.us/gallery/v/custom/cafe/cr750/

I had 26 degrees (Celcius) on the M1 on the way home (global warming... ha!)

You are too quick Dave - I'm just uploading the pictures to the Gallery.  No audio on my old digital camera I'm afraid so I don't bother with the movie functions.

Come back in 10 minutes.

Great pictures Steve, thanks for loading them. Just curious, one of the shots from the left rear shows a cylindrical object with a red cap and maybe a hose going into the cap (hard to make out the detail). What is this? If I had to guess it was some sort of catch for oil, or something??

Guess that settles the argument 'to brace or not to brace' - no sign of a fork brace there, but then again I haven't checked the gallery.  Is a fork brace in lieu of a fender necessary, if even on this fantastic bit of bike there isn't one?  BTW - didn't the CR750 have a fender of one form or another?

how did they do with the CR? ,mick.

The bike ran well Mick but it was getting very hot and was running into a head wind.
Chris was about eight tenths of a second of his own class course record.
More about my exploits later.

How fast is that thing vs. a modern streetbike I wonder? Just curious.

Skylar, it only has a stock motor, its fastest time over the quarter is 13.3 seconds...fastest terminal when I rode was 106 mph.
A GSXR750 would murder it.
The fastest recorded time was at Daytona in 1970 when Ralph Bryans clocked 161 mph on a factory race version.
Chris has clocked 127mph but the bike would have pulled a higher gear...so perhaps with a higher gear and lighter rider, perhaps 135 or there abouts.

Great looking bike!
Did you say it runs hot? (With the fairing?)

Just curious as to air flow across the engine with the fairing?

Happy birthday M, it was just a very hot day, these air cooled motors do get hot under racing conditions.
We don't normaly have overheating problems, if we know it is going to be a scorcher we take a fan and generator to cool it off between runs.

Thanks for answering all the questions Sam.

We had a great day, although Jim admits to being a little saddle sore when he got home. He obviously needs a more comfy bike...

Sam.

Skylar, $51 seems a lot of money for a book in Japanese, unless you don't mind spending that sorta money to get some good pics.

A few years back I ordered a workshop manual and parts book for my MVX250F from Honda.
It cost me with shipping and import duty £170 ($300)  :( :( :( when I got it, it was all in Japanese >:( >:( >:( but i had to :D :D :D ;D ;D

Sam.

hey Sam, do think there's any pics of the CR in that mag? I might buy it & scan it, that looked like a CR on the cover and I believe there's a chapter on it in there
