CB750 SOHC clutch lifter plate
« on: May 12, 2014, 05:09:42 AM »
Hello,
Is there a secret to tightening up the 4 bolts that compress the clutch lifter plate down onto the 4 clutch springs, I have done the x pattern one turn at a time but one of the lobes on star of the lifter plate cracked, I have another but am wary about tightening it, any advice much appreciated

The lifter breaks usually because there is unequal pressure exerted on tightening, or the spring wanders out of it's position when tightening. Heavy duty springs raise the game even further. Try tightening down a quarter turn at a time, x pattern, and check the spring positions continuously. Takes a while, but worth it.

There is a "secret" to it and if you do not do it, you will just keep breaking the $50 lifter plates no matter how carefully you tighten the bolts.

The way to NOT break the lifter plate is to tighten the 4 bolts a little at a time and between tightening the bolts tap on the edges of the lifter plate with your ratchet or ratchet handle. You will notice that each time you tighten, then tap on the edge of the lifter plate that when you go to tighten the bolts further, that they will be loose again.
That is how you know it is aligning.

If one of the ears of the broken one is missing it will not work correctly.
Look at the plate carefully and you will see how small the edges are that have to line up.

Just tighten all four bolts a couple turns each- then tap all around. You will notice that all the bolts will be loose again. Just keep going.

If any of the flange bolts loose contact with or keep pressure on any of the plate corners, the spring pressure will break it from under neath.  1/2 turn increments only.  If you find the screws are loose as you are turning them, you're going too fast with the other screws.
No secrets.  Just keep the spring pressure even between all of the plate corners.
