I need a better horn. 750 k5.
« on: May 06, 2014, 02:01:08 PM »
So my horn lets out a gentle "hmmmmph" that barely registers above engine volume at idle. Lots of people are selling OEM horns they say work well. And the OEM horn bolts and wires right on and looks good. How loud was the OEM horn when it was new or when it works well? Or is there a good recommendation for a good horn that fits well on the horn frame tab and looks good.

Thanks.

Just last week I replaced my OEM horn, on the recommendation of another forum member, with a hella brand horn. It's available ebay/amazon, it is louder (116db), and it does not require a rely - just plug and play.

Does it play well with the horn mount tab?

Just looked at them. Some pretty garish colors. Do they make a simple chrome or even black? Seems they also only come in pairs.

Mine is galvanized metal. It mounts well. I'll post a pic.

I'm really tempted to get one of the Subi style red Hella horns... Maybe two and mount them abour 4 or 5 inches apart.

You'll need to run them through a relay then, because the current draw will be too much for the switch.

The reason that you'll see two horns together is one is a high tone and one is low. Together they make the "framp-framp" sound of a big vehicle. High tone, low, dissonance, and the higher dB level make them much more penetrating that the "bzzzzz' from the stock horn.

those little disc horns even in pairs are a joke, just fit a pair of "freeway blasters"or "fanfare"horns via a relay and be done, decibel numbers mean #$%*!full stop!you need a good loud and deep harmonic sound that sounds bigger and louder than it is.

I fitted double snail horns. Cheap louder solution than the OEM style whisper I had before (new). I had Stebel Nautilus in my mind but I wanted to try the really cheap horns.

The horns demands a relay with direct power from battery via 1,5mm2 wires (AWG15). Horns worked very bad and intermittent fed direct via the horn wires.

And you can paint it black to match the frame, blends in nicely.

I had a spare set of horns for my Volvo lying around and swapped one of them in, it mounts to the stock mounting bracket and its loud as hell. Plug and play, I have used it a bunch in city traffic and I can tell you people hear it lol. Looks like the stock horn or at least stock enough for me.
