I found a sandcast!
« on: May 11, 2014, 05:48:40 PM »
I have a line on a legitimate sandcast and will be looking at it  tomorrow night. The bike is one owner and it has all the original parts. It's been in a basement. I have been trying to register at the sandcast forum and cannot. I emailed the Mods but have heard nothing back. Anyone have any info?

I am trying to figure out what it may be worth. The seller also has a 70 k1 I think. Pics when I get them.

Thanks.

Pretty hard to give a value until you post some pics and give us more info. Miles, history, motor stuck, condition, etc. You can get some idea by checking ebay too.

Thanks Johnie. I have been on Ebay and also researched the forums. I was more wanting to know if anyone could help me register on the sandcast forum - no joy there.

I will post all the relevant info/pics tomorrow night. Right now I know very little. It is #1370 though. Dunno if that is frame or engine. Probably frame.

Thanks everyone. Pics to come tonight. This is an exciting deal and I am usually reading about it not doing it! Very cool.

Here is a teaser pic of the '70. I have got more but you get the idea. No pics of the sandcast yet.

It's got a Bassini exhaust which I bet sounds pretty cool.

You should try to bundle both the Sandcast and the K0 together and get them both. 1970 bikes have some pretty nice value nowadays also.  PS- I saw earlier in original opening statement where you mentioned 70 K1, K1 is actually a 1971  ;)

OK I am a little disappointed :(.

Turns out she is not ready to sell but using my least favorite selling mode. She has had several look at it and her brand of market research is seeing who offers the most $. Got some more coming to look at it I guess. I offered her 7k for the pair. Yeah, I know - I'm cheap >:(

I did the mobile upload and it seems to take a while. Maybe pics tomorrow.

The bike is about 90% there - ugly blue paint on the tank, rough gauges. Motor turns over and shows like 33k miles. Got the correct exhaust but it's not on there in good shape though. Seat is real nice. Overall the bike looks ok.

Here's the odd part. Seller claims the husband imported the bike from Japan, the engine # is 1000720. On the neck is a standard tag but there is no date on it and where the numbers would be stamped is smooth - nothing there. Can anyone help me unravel more of the story here?

I'll post up pics tomorrow. Turns out I'm not too good at shooting old bikes - I was a little star struck truth be told!!

If the VIN ain't stamped somewhere on the left side of the steering neck, you, or she (the seller) has a problem...the date tag is just a tag, and not riveted, so they can get lost.

Sorry for the upside down pic! I didn't look too close at the left side but did not see a whole lot there. Maybe the #'s are under the tag in the frame? On the K0 the vin was on the tag right where the 69 is blank.

Not sure when they changed it, but my 12/69 KO has the VIN stamped into the left side steering neck. Also has the riveted plate on the right side neck.

I did it's the upside down one! The # probably is there on the left - I was not expecting it there and did not see it. No good pics of that area.

Anyone know why it's a 1 before the engine vin#? Japan market bike?

Oh, sorry, now I see it.  1 is the first number of the VIN, typical.  You should up your offer.

I don't know about that, can't confirm on frame vin....also I don't like the way the seller is taking offer.  Someone could have offered 50k and still doesn't mean seller is going to sell, just keep taking offer

I think 7k is very reasonable for the condition. More than I would pay for sure. Where in Boston are you? I am in Roslindale.

Good luck

Thanks Andy. I bet it is worth more but I can't take any more risk.

I was thinking what it would take to get it like the condition of a $20k bike that recently sold on Ebay. Markb has done a few and probably has a better idea but I think another 5-7k doing most of the work yourself.

I put Boston in my sig just for the benefit of people not from around here! I really live in Andover. I'm pretty sure you lent me some gap tools for my 350f years ago and we met at Lars maybe in '10? I still have my 350.

Thanks!

It appears to be a lightly stamped "E" which is CB750E-1000720. Maybe just bad picture. Those are very early Sandcast cases with the little square pad above the VIN pad. The frame VIN should be stamped on the opposite side of the neck from the tag. Also, the early VIN bikes did not have the VIN embossed in the tag and it was not riveted on. The range between frame and engine numbers is larger than most, 1370 to 720, but appears to be a genuine SC specimen to me. Would probably sell on eBay for over $10k as is due to the low VIN's. 3 digit engines with the very early cases are sought after by the SC aficionados.
