Sorry to disappoint, not a Grandmother yet. It must be too cold for that baby to want to come out. Shoot ,I know when I'm in one of those things, especially on a cold night , I don't want to come out either.
But other exciting things have been going on....
Well with baby girl on the way and a just better than a shotgun wedding coming up, the father of the bride (me) was looking for some funds.
I'm in the barn when these two clowns in a white van pull into the driveway. They said they have already been downtown looking at my bikes through the windows when my wife asks them if she can help them, so she shows them around and sends them up to the house. I don't know these guys from Adam, and they have already been in my inner sanctum...No KEYS FOR THE WIFE anymore!  So, they ask if I've seen any Indians around?
 Nope.
 Do you do Indians?
I might do an Indian, depends what she looks like.
One thing leads to the next and this irritating little fat guy says he wants to make an offer on some bikes.
I'm hoping he's talking about me rebuilding one of the 3 500 projects that are laying around,or maybe that cb175 that's been here for a while or, ooohh maybe I can dump that 84 650 , that would be nice.
Nah, we don't want parts bikes, we want them all finished so we can resell them right away.
I don't know if I'd part with any of them, haven't been able to yet.
So the little guy offers me 1200 each.
Each what? What do you mean?
Each of the finished 500 and 550's downtown...Not the 450, too small.and , none of the unfinished ones.
It's been great meeting you guys from Ohio...Idaho , or wherever it is you come from that ends in an "O", but you'll have to do a whole lot better than that.  They go for 4 grand downstate and California is higher . Showed them a guy in Westchester County that blows them out the door for $4000 each. Well, the two talked about it out in the driveway, and even called some so called expert.
They come back in and want to buy my torn up leather jacket from a wreck I'd had years ago. A hundred bucks!
I haven't fit in that one in ten years, and it probably has a mouse nest in the pocket, Sold!
The bikes ,he says we're at 15 for each and there's 20 of them
See ya, I'm at 3650  each and I didn't call you, not even sure if I would sell them. Give me your best price or there's nothing left to talk about.
Back out in the driveway they go, start the van , and then come back in. We thought it over and think 2250 is our best price.
Sorry gentlemen , 2500 for each , that's an even 50 thou.and I'll throw in the camo sidecar, cashiers check to my bank, when it clears , come get em.
Back to the van they went , started backing down the driveway, then stopped. This time the tall skinny guy comes back.
We'd be kicking ourselves if we leave without them. Deal.
That was 2 days ago, the truck and trailer came this morning

So, my shop looks empty now
The only thing left is the parts stash , the 175, the 84 650. and 3 500 projects

So now that daddy has funding...a nice small wedding... and some dollars to make some purdy 500's.
and start all over again.

Well, I'm sure there has to be a bit of sadness to see them go.  The good news though is that now you get to rescue and restore a whole lot more SOHC's. :)

So just so I got this right, you sold TWENTY finished/running 500/550s at $2500 a piece for $50K!?  Those guys got the DEAL of the century -- at least for California prices.

I understand the need you have to free up capital for the wedding and all, but you just put those buyers in the bike dealer business.

I guess you can now focus on you new projects and the many other 500/550/650s to be rescued!  ;)

Nice...it is the day of pranks
(and my cousin's bday)
If you had 20 500s/550s/650s you had an obsession....kind of like a few others have.  It would be a nice problem to have but, storage for 20 bikes in a humid environment would be a bit of work to keep them clean, polished,  and corrosion at bay. The first step is key to the last...

Well, based on the pictures he has shown in the past, I wouldn't be surprised if he has around that many.

The storage isn't really an issue, I polish the ones I don't ride 2 maybe 3 times a year, Turn them over at least every three months unless I get the urge to kick them in between.
The bigger problem is the short window to ride here in the Northeast, there just isn't enough time. I used to keep 10 machines licensed ,insured and ready to ride at all times. Then I have my favorite rides that get more miles than others and before you know it one or two hasn't been ridden. I try to play catch up and ride the ones I missed, fill the tank at the gasstation and watch the growing puddle of fuel spread under the bike, then it carb's cleaning time on a couple of bikes that just sat too long . What a waste of time, money and energy. I don't mind cleaning carbs on a rebuild, but it really burns my butt to think this could have been avoided if I had just taken them out a little more. In reality, I don't have enough time , I might actually ride 7 of them but  I still keep 10 legal. I drain the fuel in the sealed tanks and empty the bowls  until maybe I find time to run the others.
Sometimes I think What a waste just storing them. Then I remember what Daffy Duck always said
"IT'S MINE! Mine! Mine!ALL MINE! HA HA HA HA HA MINE ,MINE, MINE!" .....smart duck.
I visit them often and try to schedule what one might need some attention in between building new projects. It can be a handful and sometimes I admire the guys with only one or two bikes because they can channel their energy and funds into other things like big piston kits, fancy tires, a pro paint job or double front dual and rear disc brakes. We all make choices, and yes i have at least that many but I try not to count them, numbers don't mean anything anyways it's all the fun of the rebuild that really counts and the fact that one more isn't going to the crusher.
I couldn't help the April fools thing, sorry to those offended. But I'll have you know it took a while to get that place that empty and clean just for the picture....the driveway looked like hell but the garage looked convincing. Our county has been writing that TV show with those junk dealers looking for "rusty gold"and trying to get them up here for some reason, so that was fresh in my mind...and I thought it could be fun.

Dry storage is best but the heat of Southern AZ comes with a monsoon season of rain normally from July some years to Late September or even into October.  I loved living in Tucson.  Sierra Vista had some great friends but the job sucked and weather wasn't as nice in the winter but it was actually better in the summer. It was at 4800 ft whereas Tucson is around 2200-2300 (?) and Phoenix is around 1100-1200 and is blazing hot in the summer with a nastry inversion bubble similar to what Denver gets so the sprawling cities of the metro area (more like LA) make it less neighborhood friendly that Tucson is...
Rubber, vinyl, & paint don't hold up to the baking in the desert if not maintained.
David
P.S.
Just need to hire me to be your bike valet to keep them clean, running, riden, and ready for your use...within reason of course given maintenance and other things that happen normally.

Ah, the confession of a jealous man! Doesn't have a warehouse full of CBs yet, and comes crying to the feet of The Great Hoarder. Where's your self-respect, Ron?

RB is the role model for all us wannabes. More bikes than fingers and toes, and more projects than time. It's a wonderful life!

LOL The Great Hoarder, Why I'm just a lowly collector of classic motorbikes..............who doesn't know the meaning of enough or too many.
I have enrolled in the twelve step program just in case, and I have to tell anyone else who was thinking of enrolling, there are no sponsors here that haven't been backslidin every time they come across a sohc4. The rules  sketchy and are really really tough , but there seems to be loopholes big enough to run a Goldwing through.
It's a rigorous program for sure, and when you are on it , I guarantee you that you will never see as many affordable 4's on Craig's List as when you are totally committed to this program.  The only downside I see is that this abundance of cheaper machines dry up once you fall off the wagon.
Ron I was just checking, You know how serious folks can be about these machines. Just wanted to be sure  no one was offended by my April 1 follie.

Isn't Step 1 admitting you have a problem... no problem, right RB? As long as the mortgage is paid, bills are paid, retirement acct is growing, spouse is (reasonably?) happy, kids if you got'em are well adjusted (or you did the best you could), then what's to worry about? The hobby is a hobby and it directs your hands and keeps your brain active and the creative side stimulated...all good for your health and well being.
You aren't hoarding and putting yourself into credit nightmare over an out of control issue, so, you are OK, right?

As long as the mortgage is paid, bills are paid, retirement acct is growing, spouse is (reasonably?) happy, kids if you got'em are well adjusted (or you did the best you could), then what's to worry about? The hobby is a hobby and it directs your hands and keeps your brain active and the creative side stimulated...all good for your health and well being.
You aren't hoarding and putting yourself into credit nightmare over an out of control issue, so, you are OK, right?

Wasn't this essentially the same justification argument the cokehead's from a Wall Street used in the '80s? They could afford it, hence they didn't have a problem? Doesn't sound like Dave is much of a sponsor or supporter, RB. I'd stay clear of him and proceed with your plans of emptying out the hoard. I'll be by around 10:00 with my trailer to help you find the shop floor  ;)

Oh oh,  I'm gonna have to check that 12 step program agreement.
Chapter 1  Could I be a Hoarder,
Chapter 2 How to Stop New Purchases and feel good about it,
Chapter 3 Get All Your Parts Together and ..... ,
there it is,  in Chapter 4  " Sponsor's Agreement " pages.
          Hmmm, it's pretty thick.
Wait a minute, what's all this small print about?
And chapter 5 and 6 are just blank pages!
   Hey,
I'm starting to think there is no 12 step program here at all.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.
550 Snowbike -Somebody had to do it.

Just when I was going to call Cal about this "12 step program", he pull's in the driveway!
No problem.    I was getting all upset about nothing.
I thought I should share the good news!
Cal just pulled out of the driveway and relieved me of 3  excess 550's,   as described in Chapter 7 " Weening" ,  just when I was starting to worry about failing the "program".
Says I'll be feeling effects  later.
 What a good sponsor!
and,     just think,     after only a few more visits I might be cured!
