Well, the side benefit is that we (hopefully) get to see photos of the 650 re-fresh.  I hear that the CDI boxes (or was it the stator or both) are sometimes problematic on the 650s.

The stator on 650's are known to be deficient , something about the coating on the wires not being able to stand up to temps , get brittle , and get to be a problem. There are a couple different ways to attack that if its the problem.
As for the CDI boxes, I have never picked up a 650 where the boxes weren't burned up, Most times I hear the PO has been charging and trying to start the bike from jumping the battery from a running car. I asked Pamco Pete if he could make a set up for us 650 guys so that we could run them off a 550 harness....no cdi boxes....no bs,it would just make life less expensive and easier without all that junk, and it's getting hard to find decent 650 harnesses that haven't been cut or burned so the aftermarket 550 harness and the Pamco set up would kill allot of the unnecessary issues.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

That would be a great solution.  I remember trading messages about this last year.  Pamco Pete will hopefully come around to doing it!

Glad the bike got you home ok...I always worry about doing more damage when things like that happen.

Well, the 650 will be nice when you are done. The Pamco units will be a nice addition if you can talk Pete into running a batch of them, or adding them...could always offer to serve as the test bed for them...he might give you a price cut if you help him develop it that way.

Then we'll have even more folks swapping in 650 engines into their 500/550 frames!

Good! More spare 500/550 engines for everyone with 500/550's!
Just the idea of being able to get a fresh aftermarket wiring harness for a 550 frame is appealing enough, but throw in a direct 650 upgrade to the 550 frame, with a stock harness, and electronic ignition, well , who could resist.

This is a pic of my fave 650. Bone stock ( except for the bars, 650 bars always suck /headers and replacement sidecover)
It looks alright for a machine it's age( And the picture doesn't show many flaws) but it showing the signs of age and wear. This is a roller now, soon to be freshened. I'm buffing out  the chrome and some aluminum parts as it comes off so it can all go back together without much foolin around.

My not as pretty 1982 650.  Check out the drag bars (a piece of pipe) that was on it when I picked it up.

The engine was pretty much shot, except for the lower end.  Even the crankcase had damage from over torqueing the cylinder bolts.

I remember that motor. What a mess that top end was. And there's nothing like that bottom end gravy.
We take things apart to access damage. The more you took it apart the worse it got and the hits kept coming .
I saw that nicely machined head  on your build thread. From top to bottom you did a first class job.Beautiful finish on that engine too. Guess it won't be too long before it's back in the cradle. Exotic parts throughout. A high end build for sure, when you pull out all the stops, you're not just fooling around.
Doesn't matter how pretty it was when you got it, there will be lines of guys looking at every time you stop (when it's finished) for sure.
I can see it already, a crowd appears ,  the guy in the front of the crowd will always say " I remember having a bike like that" . Most days you can deal it but, some days you may find it hard not to say "NO YOU DIDN'T". Couldn't blame you if you did. This is your signature piece. Excellent work.
My 650 freshening is a  little surprise project that just needs doing, nothing special, and couldn't compare to your project...And that's one of the things I've always liked about this site. Members here aren't afraid to take projects to the next level and are still interested in any project that any member has ,no matter how standard. This is just another example of why this site , with it's members, is really such a great place to be.

I don't think I could ever say that -- maybe think it -- but ever say it!   ::) ;D

I need to turn my attention to it again.  I've been distracted by modern in-line triples.

Today was paint off day. Took a grinder with a 4500 rpm wire wheel and ground most of the paint and rust off the frame. It seems that rust was all over under the factory paint. Just a couple of tight corners to get at ,  hit the welds, and a uniform clean up pass with the sand blaster and it'll re ready for paint.  91 degrees , dust mask , goggles , face shield ,gloves and a heavy shirt to catch flying wire bits. How much fun!
Most of the chrome has been polished, some mounting parts and the center stand need to be stripped but all and all a semi productive day. The engine sits on the cycle jack waiting for some attention. those filthy cabs have been taken a light bath in solution and looking better.
The pipes had been burned blue recently. Nice if you have a BSA or an old Triumph ,but not wanted on my 650, took a bit of polish and time  at  the wheel to get them back to chrome...also looking better now.
The frame has no protection from humidity now so I'll sand blast it after the holiday and shoot it  black.
I'm amazed at the over all condition of this machine, although it looked great in a picture, decent in person by the time it was all taken apart it will need the same treatment a junk yard find would receive to bring it back to an acceptable condition. The wiring harness need a good cleaning too ,cant even guess the colors of the wires the way they are now...What kind of owner have I been to this machine, I've put this freshening up off way too long....it's embarrassing.
At least it's getting done I guess.

So the frame has been grinder wire brushed down , then sandblasted

I shot the frame gloss black

Changed out the ball bearing in the neck to all balls tapered, changed out the rear wheel bearing to all balls too, fresh brake shoes while I was there. Starting to put it back together, I'm taking it slow for a change, and enjoying it.
Then it's time to clean this nasty motor up and paint it.

Spent a few hours today cleaning up that dirty engine. Have the wheels and bars on the frame so when the engine is finished painted it'll go into the cradle....where other things like clutch and polishing covers can happen with the motor safe in it's place.
Yes , I am still feeling at one with this machine, even though it's spread out all over the shop.

I'm working long hours at my real job, finally, but I was able to paint  that engine. It's cast aluminum on the tranny and head , the jugs are semi gloss black ( couldn't resist)  , there is no cast iron color on the engine , that would mess up my system. I  really like cast iron color  but at my house ,the only engines that have that color on the tranny are the ones that I rebuilt. All others are subject to rebuild if I get bored. That's the only way I can be sure  which one  got what. The carbs are soaking now. Hope to get back to play with it all  late next week. Pics when worthy.

 I  found this on fb
A Little 10-year-old girl was walking home, alone, from school one day, when a big man on a black motorcycle pulls up beside her. After following along for a while, turns to her and asks,
"Hey there little girl, do you want to go for a ride?"
"NO!" says the little girl as she keeps on walking.
The motorcyclist again pulls up beside her and asks,
"Hey little girl, I will give you $10 if you hop on the back."
"NO!" says the little girl again as she hurries down the street.
The motorcyclist pulls up beside the little girl again and says,
"Okay kid, my last offer! I'll give you 20 Bucks "and" a Big Bag of Candy if you will just hop on the back of my bike and we will go for a ride."
Finally, the little girl stops and turns towards him and Screams Out...
"Look Dad" "You're the one who bought the Harley instead of the Honda ...YOU RIDE IT!!"

Happy Father's Day

It's been a busy spring/summer so far , long hours at work, 6 days a week......yeah I know , and some guys had to walk to work barefoot  and uphills both ways. Not complaining , just haven't had much time to finish the 650.
Frame has been sandblasted and painted. Engine has been cleaned and painted. chrome has been polished as it was dismantled. Wiring harness is clean and good, new cdi (cooked one, that's how this clean up started). Couldn' t take the factory paint anymore, so it's repainted.Carbs cleaned, new plugs and caps, all balls steering tapers and wheel bearings, oil filters...blah blah blah.... but the worst part was the fuel tank, it had some rust, thought since it was decent paint I would go the vinegar route it worked fine but got called to work on my day off before making sure I had that tank totally dry. looked in it today, uh oh, I get to do that over again. The 650 tanks are different than the 500/550 tanks in that there is a lip at both openings and getting any rust and the last 1/2 pint of liquid out of it is a challenge. in fact I may just put in some bolts and throw it in a dryer with some pillows, at least there won't be a flash rust issue then.
Changing out the clutch , I come to the realization there is no more clutch cover gaskets on any shelf in my shop...Even worse , Honda doesn't have them anymore either. I ordered an Athena kit...complete I thought but, it's just the top end.
Parts Unlimited has no bottom end gaskets for this machine for some reason. Found some  off brand on Ebay but I don't know if I should trust the quality, may pi$$  away an afternoon some day and cut  a gasket or two out so there is a replacement on the shelf. sounds like a complete waist of time though, maybe I should get a couple of those off brand gaskets.
If I can find the time to finish it, there will be pics.
This is the first summer in years that I have spent more time on a seat  than wrenching, for a change...although this is slightly unsettling, it is certainly enjoyable.

RB,

Can you point to a particular cause for the cooked CDI box -- something to avoid??

No , I can't say for sure but, I expect the burnt cdi was probably original (only burned one of them) , and the battery was 4 years old...both were probably near the end of use and due for replacement soon . It was a good thing, forced me to  examine the overall condition of a machine that I usually just hop on and ride off with. Though it wasn't a rolling wreck, but some needed maintenance  was given , and we are both better off for it.
Should the problem happen again, I'll go through the charging system  first since 650's have been known to be weak in that area, then go through the ignition system. I'm hopeful the  problem was nothing more than these old parts failing.

When I rebuilt my 650 motor, I replaced my stator with a new Rick's reproduction.  I'm wondering if I should have replaced my rotor, too.  They are usually bullet-proof on these bikes but I've heard the 650 charging systems are a little weak.

I seem to recall that the 650 CDI pickups would go bad and that's part of why they were treated like an unloved red-headed step child. Personally, I like red heads...so, I wouldn't have that issue.  ;D ;)
I used to have a red beard, but now it is mainly grey... getting too old I guess.

RB, you know what they say...pictures or it didn't happen.  BTW...someone was talking about talking Pamco Pete into doing an electronic ignition setup for the 650 so it could be changed over to 750 or 550 or aftermarket coil setup with his electronic ignition setup.  Maybe give him a ping (email) to see if you can add on to the encouragement for that to happen. HondaMan's box could be done IF you could change the taper on the shaft or adapt a 550 points advancer and points plate to the 650. I know during paulage's (boy I miss him)  hybrid build he touched on the taper of the shaft being different and he had a machinist change the taper or adapt the parts he was using to build his hybrid motor.  I would imagine Brent Waller might have this but I think his racing class didn't allow the stroker setup that dropping a 650 crank into 550 cases like Paulage did.  Paulage also built a very very high displacement version but he had a great machinist overlap the sleeves to allow that huge displacement 650 hybrid (750 overbore sized pistons) it was a monster. He has that build archived in the bowels of the SOHC4 forum as well.

Glad you have been busy, better than being unemployed...helps to have your own business or be in a business where business is good.
Hopefully the daughter's house (I thought you indicated it was planning to be built this year) has gone well so far... It sure has been a hot summer so far. June having record temps for lots of places.  We have had very hot temps and high humidity this week with even hotter temps until the weekend.
Keep hydrated with water and other liquids and stay out of the mid day sun if you can...

Watching and waiting for the pics...where's that popcorn smiley?
