Haven't seen many out here either. The cm 400 is around here allot, not a bad little bike, not the automatic ,   I've found them to be very easy to ride and as predictable as you can get on 2 wheels. My wife doesn't ride , not that I haven't offered a machine , and she's just dangerous on the back of mine, so she hasn't been for a ride in many years. She shows interest when around the garage by saying something like " Now which one would this one be?". So I give her the long drawn out answer pointing out the differences between each machine, it doesn't interest her that much, so she usually tells me she's got something else to do... she won't be visiting the garage again anytime soon. I really feel bad about it but, she just isn't any good with wrenches either. I guess if we had to share interests together I'd be in the flower garden on sunny Saturday afternoons , Uhh, not happening. So it works , but it would be nice to have a rider to share the ride with once in a while.

Spent the day with the 750A. Wiring  repairs have been soldered and shrink wrapped, ends all cleaned up, wires are all buttoned up in the headlight and battery area. Only wiring left to do is the rear blinkers and tail light , but that might have to wait til it gets new paint.
Got into the stock carbs that looked like PO threw them down the stairs, I broke one overflow that was bent , even with heat it just snapped off, oh well, then I looked at one of the outside carbs and saw the end that goes into the mounting rubber was just less than a quarter gone....like maybe PO did throw them down the stairs. Hmmm. So I have had a couple pair of early 750 carbs that I've been wanting to use on something and they don't work on 500s or 550s , but they do fit directly on the 750 A as long as I used the rubber parts that came with them, and I just happened to have a set of those hanging around too. How lucky, and it got better , I had  new push /pull throttle cables on the wall for years. So that's all on and looks promising. I'm going with pods as the original box from the A won't work with the carbs I put on, but, I do have a halfways decent stock airbox from an older model 750 that might fit in the frame, just needs a good cleaning I hope. Or maybe switch the boots from the older one to the A air box... still up in the air as I haven't found a set of pods worth buying yet.
Rear sprocket came in , chain too,and the wrong front sprocket. So I 'm waiting for it to show up so I can get it finished up mechanically. The wrong oil pan gasket showed up too, so I ordered one from a 77 to see if that would work, waiting for that too.
Just want to get the oil in it , throw in a fresh battery, sinc the carbs, and see what it does. I may have to wait for warmer weather to paint the body work, but I really want to finish it before winter. Again , pics when there's something worth seeing.

Looking at Accuweather’s forecast for the next 3-4 weeks here it looks like the weather is going to be cool, so best to get that paintwork finished up very soon, before like you said...it is too cool to do paintwork.

Our local weather forecasters can't figure out what it may be like tomorrow much less than 3 or 4 weeks from now. We have had such a fast fall this year , leaves were on the ground before the color came out. I did in my travels see something I have never seen before, there was this 30 foot maple, every leaf on the tree was bright pink on the topside and a very light pink almost white on the underside of the leaves. The leaves that fell off surrounded the tree were almost all upside down and light and every leaf still on the tree was bright pink, an amazing sight. It does make me wonder why all the grounded leaves were upside down, how do they know what side to fall on I wonder. Whenever I drop boards on the ground without nails in them they always land on either side...put a nail through it and it's almost guaranteed to land nails up. Nature is amazing and paint time is running out quickly.

Oil pan gasket came in today, it's the correct one  this time. The rear sprocket that I thought was right was also wrong and the correct replacement also came in today. As for the front sprocket, the correct one came in a couple days ago. At least the right chain came in the first time. Now all I need is some time to put it back together. I stole some time at lunch and rebuilt the brake cylinder, had to, the pad was stuck in rust in the caliper , all cleaned up ,polished  and new piston seal installed. mc was in good working order for some reason...need to remember to bleed the system , didn't have time today. Picked up some cheap pods because I didn't see anything I liked, won't run an engine without an air filter of some sort. will upgrade at some point. Still haven't had time to clean and seal the inside of the tank yet , so there is no new paint on any of the metal work yet ( maybe next year). hope to start it up next week , hasn't been run in years, has slashed pipes, looks loud, wonder how it will sound.

Glad you have been having some fun with the 750A when not being irritated by the wrong parts arriving...
I have been prepping for move and have not had time to dig out pipes for you.  Moving back to Tucson next week.

  Chain and sprockets installed.
The MC that I thought was good, was only good for a few pumps, then crapped out. Got a new MC for the same price as the rebuild kit, that's on and bled.
There's been no sign of the pods since I ordered them. Expected them in a few days...Amazon says Oct 28- Nov 14, oh well.
Pan gasket installed , filter installed , and oil is in.
Didn't repaint the tank, I like it the way it is really...did some minor chip repair ,looks good enough to ride, to me.
Maybe next spring I can fire this thing up, it seems that snow is on the way, riding time is over. I'll roll it off the lift to make room for a back burner project that I hoped to get to this past summer, but didn't.
A ways back I picked up a 83 550 , not the usual 550 for me. And 2 winters ago or better I picked up an 84 650 night hawk that had had some front end damage according to the front wheel and heat discolored forks. Can't trust the 650 and not a fan of it's overall appearance, but the engine had good compression and seemed to go through the gears alright ...these bikes are shaft drives. I got the 550 running right away but it sounded like a lifter issue happening ...Then I thought how much fun would it be to switch that 650 into the 550....should slip right in , maybe change out the airbox rubbers and headers, maybe swingarm too , don't know yet....but would like to start this project soon so it'll be ready for spring too. If there's time , maybe I could finally get to the 1100 wing too. haven't done one of those yet. Pics when I find my camera.

I gave up on the cheap pods and upgraded to very nice pods. They showed up, all of them at once, I like them  , went on nice. Finished off all the little things on that 750a that needed to be done. It's ready for a battery and gas but I won't leave it in the tank or carbs over the winter with fuel in them,  so fire up will have to wait till spring.
https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipMrunoqhijGC4wMXx-zJIjzn2Jd5aESU1EYiLV9
So the last of the 3 500's is so very near to complete now. I couldn't find a decent used exhaust recently, so I bought a Delvic header on line. easy peasy, looks okayy, nothing stock about it though ...the only thing I don't like about 4 into 1 headers is the void that is left on the shift side, you know , nothing there except the ugly center stand . I'm glad I have the headers  but disappointed with that void and the uneven ness of the overall appearance 2 into 1 s would solve the awkwardness of it all but they have been  overpriced over the years and the cheaper headers must have put them out of production as far as I can tell.Too bad.
Any how  All of the 3 500's got Frankenstuff side covers last week , I am very happy . Can hardly wait til spring to paint them up. And this spring I plan to get some more side covers as an upgrade to those fragile stock covers that are on some of the other  bikes.
#3 , the last of the set is in need of chain and sprockets  (on order) and a chain guard that I'm hoping to acquire soon, then that should be complete and also ready for firing in the spring. Changed out the seat cover and it's looking so much better now. I picked up a cheap MC for the 750a  works good, not 70's design morelike the 80's version mc . Thinking of replacing the one on this 500 with one of those , it's actually less expensive than the rebuild kit for the original one and I'm okay with the rectangular shape for a change.
Pics ...I forgot how to do it again. Kids come home for the holidays soon, perhaps they'll show me how and this time I'll write it all down. Photobucket was so easy way back when and you'd think Google could make it even easier than that. not. oh well.

Chain and sprockets are on, new fuel tank cap seal I suspect the ethanol hardened it up and the fact the last one  40 years old might have had something to do with it too. My new to me chain guard came in today and it may be the most beautiful chain guard I have ever seen.  Can't wait til tomorrow to put it on , stare at it a while, maybe longer and then find something else that bike needs.
I've spent a little time on looking at what I thought was a finished 78 750 hondamatic that was missing the kickstand linkage, threaded rod and neutral shifter, and decided since I've never fired up one of these machines maybee I should have the ablity to be switched into the neutral position or perhaps I might see it take off from the stand and disappear down the road with no rider or maybe just fall over , you know, something stupid like that. So I'm looking for those parts and would be interested should anyone out there has these parts extra and would like to sell them. please PM me.

Sorry guys, no pictures. My children aren't willing to help me with the process, told them what I want to do ,what I did with photobucket vs.google, how to get pics from there to here....instead of offering other options.....well  they get all pi$$ed of with me talking about apples and oranges , they're different, can't expect to share only one pic....blah blah blah without sharing entire albums, you can't do it . not going to do it. Hmmmm , been a long holiday and they are here until monday...and no farggin pictures.  I love the holidays , my girls stay just long enough sometimes to pi$$ me off , so this must be one of those times.
I'll have to find another way.

Just spent about half an hour catching up on this thread.  I've been away from the site for far too long but with a good excuse, I've been putting as many miles on bikes as I could for the past few years.  And since we typically have way more days that are rideable than not here in Georgia, that has taken quite a bit of my time.  But your thread has always been one of my favorites.  Thanks for keeping us updated...makes me smile whenever I read your posts and look at the photos.

OH my, are you lucky! I only day dream about riding a few times a day, okay , every hour. How nice it would be to just open the door and roll one out whenever it isn't raining ,because it's almost always warm enough to enjoy freely all year long and not a forced bone chilling ride that really doesn't satisfy the itch.   Sooooooooooooo lucky. Think  you could ride a mile for a weather poor unfortunate from the north east? I'd really enjoy knowing that you enjoyed that mile as much as I would. Thanks in advance.

40 degrees  F today! the theater was not freezing and I had a set of gators waiting for a day like today to put on that 500 survivor  finally.  Today was the first time that I backed a bike on the table ,set it on the center stand, locked in the rear wheel ,strapped the rear down and stuffed building materials under the oil pan to keep the front wheel up while the forks are removed.
Usually, at home, I just hang the bike off the rafters . Don't know which way is easier...just know that I was happy to be playing with Hondas today.

Hard to believe it's February, it was 45 degrees out when I arrived at work this afternoon. normally it's colder than a well diggers arse this time of year.

At least it's been warm every now and the so we could get last years projects completed.and maybe get some riding in THIS summer.
As luck would have it ,I just got home from another operation this afternoon  that was much like last years operations . So riding will have to wait again this year for me as there are more operations coming my way.
So I figured I could do some painting on the less pretty machines on my down time, try some new styles ..custom stuff, it'd be fun.
These plans are looking farther away than ever now, last week my wife found out she has an aggressive type of breast cancer. This isn't anything that I can fix, not the right tools , no shop manual,  so it has to go to the local experts. Been to see a few experts so far , and bunches of tests. This summer is gonna be all about getting operations one at a time  with just enough space between them so's we the healthier one can care for the weakest that just came from surgery. It's all in the scheduling so far, but we are trying to be aggressive , and hopefully, get back to a normal life here in mid summer if that is possible. It would be so much easier if she came with HONDA stamped on her seat. Guess we'll see how it goes.

Okay, so I'm back on the superpube tube, repair surgery this coming Tuesday and hopefully back in the swing of things in a month or so,then I can take care of my wife. So during this idle time of doctor's office visits, surgery and bedrest, I've been thinking of what project I should do next and came up with a somewhat different idea than I've had at any time before.
Ready? Warning to those with weak stomachs. Drum roll please. Change a four stroke 500four engine to a 2 stroke!
Ta Daaaa.
Twice as much fire than the four strokes! More POWER! How much fun would that be on an 1/8 or quarter mile? Now this plan is just starting to come together in my head, and let me remind you that the hospital has pretty strong drugs and I've had some time on my hands
I would like to start with removing the head, toss the camchain, cam, valves, and everything above the head gasket.  Machine exhaust ports just above the piston at the bottom of the stroke . What kind of piston is to be determined at a later date, but would like a high compression dome style and machine a large hemi head from one block of aluminum or some kind of alloy with room for a spark plug and compression release. I want the intake ports high in the head, but not too high so it'll fit in a 500 frame.May need to get stronger head bolts. I'm thinking that the cooling fins should look excessive since there will be more heat with more fire. The header system will also have to be custom made. and I would like to cap the old oil passages going up the the jugs and reroute oil pressure to the crank , wrist pins and cylinder walls from the bottom up to keep the bottom end cool and lubricated. This is all off the cuff right now but , I think I'm on a roll. I'm thinking that timing should be about the same on the stock setup  only have to make them fire twice as often ....Smaller points cam maybe or 4 sets of points or 2 sets of electronic ignition on the same plate or separate plates...again off the cuff. As for carbs, I'm liking the idea of 2 big snowmobile carbs, or 4 that I have on the shelf or stay with ...doesn't matter yet it's all in idea stage now.
What do you all think? Has it been done yet? Should it be done? I want to do this . I would like the groups input about all aspects of this idea. I haven't talked about this with Mike and I know he's the man to talk to about machining stuff like this, so I'm looking to put together a plan that could make this a viable reality instead of something that explodes on the first kick ...and would like some of the unforseen bugs that haven't entered my mind to possibly be exposed by anyone who is interested so this could turn out to be a decent, worthwhile project...even if it sounds stupid
So what do you all think?

I have a 550 frame, 5 500 engines that need rebuild. Maybe the 500 trans isn't the best trans to work with but I don't have any beat 650 engines on the rack, that would be a better setup. Still in idea stage.
Yes a cr500 would be great in a perfect world but it's not a 4, and I don't have a cr.  And I just can't help but wonder what a 2 stroke 4 would be like. Perhaps I should be on the lookout for a beat 650 engine and use that as a base. Hmmm.

I don't know enough about 2 strokes to tell ya anything useful...seems like it would be incredible amount of work for  very poor result

...a guy over at caferacer.net put a Kawi triple in a Honda vf500f frame, a powerful 2 stroke engine known for its flimsy frame mounted in one of the best performing frames of the eighties, and it ended up 30-40 pounds lighter than either the stock Kaw or Honda.  quite a combination!

I can understand your lust for a poor man's Yamaha TZ750, 'cuz who doesn't want that.

Honda did have a 2 stroke 4 cylinder, I think it was a v4? nsr something?  was never sold in america

Hey RB I saw your post about your wife's cancer and am so sorry to hear about that. That's hard. Will keep you all in my prayers and thoughts for healing and comfort as it affects the whole family in many ways...  Hang in there and stay positive about the outcome will be in a good direction. That really makes a big difference in outcome as our mind and brain play a role in our healing. I hope the increased time you spend with your wife over the coming months draws you closer and your presence gives her strength. As it likely will.
Cancer Centers of America have given some people I know a better quality of life with their methods and approach. So, don't limit your options as not all cancer treatment doctors use similarethods.  I hope and pray they are able to successfully stop it's spread and growth and reverse the tide while giving her a good quality of life during the treatments.

Thank you David. I'm trying to keep her positive and in good spirits while we schedule appointments with all the players so there is at least a good plan of action...as far as we can tell. We are first timers, it's all new to us, we can only hope that we are going the right way with the information and the professionals we meet with. Trying hard to keep a positive attitude but all her relatives and friends calling with horror stories and things to watch out for , like we have any control, but I'm sure a good attitude is needed to get through it. That and distractions help so life isn't totally focused on this one bad thing all the time.
I think that's what this 2 stroke idea might be all about for me. Funny thing, she doesn't understand one thing about engines except for what I tell her and she's actually taking an interest in this idea and has brought it up twice this morning. She isn't even interested in machines and acts like I should just do it for some reason.
So I'm thinking that this is a thing to do. I have a friend, a machinist, that hot rods chainsaws for competition, think I'll pay him a visit and see what kind of engine plan we can put together or at least point me in some kind of direction.
The strangest part of all of this 2 stroke plan is that I'm 62, don't need another machine, especially if it all works out so well that it would just scare the crap out of me to ride it, but today I feel that this is just something that I have to try.
