I love spending time in the shop especially if I'm making things work in a reasonable amount of time and I can go to the next step. This machine is not coming in at a reasonable amount of time, and has not allowed me to get past the wiring, it wouldn t bother me too much if I could identify the trouble and correct it, but it seems to be an intermittent trouble ...works one day but not the next type of stuff , get it fixed sinch up the harness and suddenly it won't work. Don't mind saying it's getting me just a little pissed at this point . Okay , so I have an entire 500 harness ,both handle bar controls for a 500 , new electrical for everything under the side cover also for a 500. I am used to the 500 bar controls because I ride 500s, easiest harness out there, and I know it 'll work as I have a few 550s in the 500s now. The only thing that was holding me back from using the 500 stuff was that I wanted to be stock, and correct by year.....well that all went out the window last night, swapped out everything to 500 and it all works fine. I should have just done that first (Hindsight) and bypass wasting all the time. But that isn't the irritating part, the kicker is I have no idea what was wrong with the last set up, half of it all was new and worked fine for a little while. Everything wire related that I took off is going in the wire parts bin , nothing gets hung back up  or reused this time.  Good , now I can move to the next step, fire it up and sync those carbs. All better now.

This one ... all the other bikes I have would be whining in the corner wanting to be happy again, not this one, never said a word. It must have been treated badly and has trust issues or something. I can't remember any of the other machines taking this long to get back in order. Hope it gets over it on first fire. We need to establish trust.
Even so, it's all still fun .

Well, hopefully it is happy to be running again and soon to see some miles. Imagine weather in NY is starting to change a bit. We won't see fall weather here in Southern AZ (Tucson) until end of October up through Thanksgiving time. Nearby mountains are at 8-9000 feet but us at 2400-2600 feet ASL it comes much later.
Hope you are enjoying time with family between wrenching sessions and work has been decent. Enjoy the last of summer and warm days for cookouts...and picnics with the wife.

Yes, summer is over and fall weather has taken over quickly. The color of the leaves seemed to start to change a while ago  but the green is still trying to hang on. The Maple trees are all trying to change color this week but the rain has washed the color out before the leaves begin to turn bright.  Had some nights below 40 degrees already, the days are upper 60s low 70 s and damp. We can expect snow the week of Halloween sometimes and have had raging blizzards on Thanksgiving...never know. I had a very chilly ride on Saturday with a heavy leather jacket on. Ran the tanks down and refilled with high test in all 3 riders and put in some marine grade fuel stabilizer incase the riding is already over and I just don't know it yet .
This summer was nice. Did a bit of outdoor cooking. My daughter bought us a Blackstone  flat top grill, not a bar b que , which I thought was going to take some time to get used to...but it's a dream . I haven't burned 1 meal beyond recognition yet.  It's pancakes eggs and  bacon, French toast breakfasts, and anything else anyone wants for lunch and dinner. Only requires minimum care to keep it seasoned and clean. That'll be taken in for the winter.
Today is Sunday , had the day off , was going to fire up and sync that stubborn little green 550 today.  Didn't do it , didn't want it laying around over the winter with fuel in it  and no  time for riding it. It can wait until early spring , I guess. We'll see , depends on Winter.

It's December, only had a little snow, but had no riding....a little chilly for me. But that doesn't mean that I have been stuck in front of the TV , I've had a machine that I wanted to get ready for  next spring that I put together a few years ago . It's a sweep the floor bike, a 76 K  that was too rusted to save the chrome so I camo painted the entire machine after rebuilding the engine. I was happy with the idea of a Camo bike since  I used to paint army trucks camo in the late 70's .

As life would have it, I picked up (by chance ) a sidecar that I found at a yard sale that had no mounts, beat paint, no windscreen , and rotten seat, bad wiring , and was just screaming "save me", a real gem for the price. Anyways, I always thought that these two pieces should be put together, so I painted it camo along with seat repair ,a plexi wind screen and some extra storage you know ,just in case. I never had an attached sidecar so I put it on my bucket list .
I was polishing up the collection when I noticed my eye kept drifting over to these 2 pieces sitting right next to each other for years and thought if I don't get to it , it'll never get done. So I finally ordered a mounting kit and put them together , order a new 16 inch tire and tube that hasn't made it here yet .

There's the glitch. After taking 2 days to set it up and rolled it around to see that the sidecar sat level in every way and the bike had just shy of a one inch tilt , and seemed to track well..... I looked at it and all together  and thought " man, I didn't think it would look so wide, they always look slimmer to me" , so I grabbed the tape and gave it a width measurement  over 65 inches. Then I checked both sets of double doors that get it outside......just over 60 inches.
I built a boat in the basement, it looks like. Have to figure a different way to get it outside this spring.

Thumbs up  8) 8) 8).  The finished product looks good.  :)

Would it be able to get through the door if you removed the sidecar wheel/fender and put the sidecar on a rolling dolly, just to get it outside?  I hope being outside isn't going to get it too 'weathered'.

That sounds better than lifting the side car and trying to push it kitty corner out the doors or taking the bolts out of it and resetting it on the sidewalk. I am however going to need a bigger trailer or a flatbed should this one break down on the road, my trailer isn't wide enough.  It's all fun and games but  there's no better way I'd rather spend my time.

I haven't seen a "deal" on a 500 or 550 in a while, Everyone seems to want $4500 and up for stuff like mine, not original from the factory, and then as you read on there is a compression issue and a host of other worn things that are original....that's not to say that there aren't beautiful low mileage all stock machines that are for sale for $5500 and better that are totally up to snuff, but well out of my price range to feed the addiction. I have seen some cafe racers that look like somebody has overspent during the build....beautiful stuff for cafe racers but the asking price $10k or close reflects the initial overspending , don't know if cafe racers are a strong right now,  but there is always someone that may pay that price or close if the don't have to do the work I suppose. That's half the fun isn't it?
Been seeing tons of 450s out there and some 2 cylinder 500s in decent condition for $800 - $1200. All fun and games.

Some parts were wore badly and in need of replacement, and other parts might have to wait to be replaced a little later ...sometimes we  can t get to  do them all at once.  So I had a knee replacement.  Just got it done last Monday, and been a bit out of it this week until today. RB, sorry to hear about needing the knee done, it will get better and you can do your therapy to get your range of motion back…. That will take a little time. I have to have my right hip replaced…later this year, working on making the hip trimmer for better surgery outcome…

Get well quick and don’t overdo it…

I was in the shop actually being productive for the first time on Friday. Playing with a 78 Honda 750 for a friend who hasn't run it in 20 years. he had tried his hand at repairing it after a smokey run in Daytona Beach way back when.... his repair efforts would yield no fruit so he just parked it for 20 years. He asked if I could look at it, so I am. Not back to work yet and am happy for anything to do that gets me out the house. like to be back to work soon.
I haven t healed properly yet, still painful, and I may have over done PT thinking it would all work faster,  didn't .Seems that I am a slow healer. They told me that I couldn't break it, hope that's true. It seems that there will be limits, and a man has got to know his limits. It'll be trail and error to find out what they are, I guess.
The good news is that I am not addicted to pain pills ...oxy  is a #$%* , won't be doing that anymore.
So I am exercising and riding bicycles every day trying to heal, stay loose and loose this limp .
Tried my fave 500 out a couple weeks ago ,  felt good in 1st gear putting around , wasn't easy to get 2nd , gave up on 3rd after a few tries and put it away. Not quite ready to ride yet, but I haven't given up tryin'.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.
