Trip of a Lifetime!
« on: May 12, 2014, 09:56:10 PM »
On Wednesday morning I will be departing for New Orleans on my 73 500k. I'll be joined by two great friends as we ride all the way there from Minneapolis.  We will head south through St Louis and then all the way to the big easy. I wouldn't be able to make this trip without the advice and knowledge gained from this forum

Final once over on Estelle tomorrow and I'll finalize my packing.  I'll be sure to post pictures and updates along the way.

Have fun. Bring a small can of chain lube and check for the chain tension every day. I found that the chain on my 550 needed adjustment every couple of days when I was on a long trip.

Stopped just outside of St Louis last night after about 550 miles. These old Hondas are impressively smooth. Heading toward Jackson Mississippi today.

My clutch is still slipping quite a bit in 5th, especially on the freeway when attempting to roll on from 70 to anything else.... clutch discs, springs, and friction plates are new. Cable is routed correctly and the pushrod is in one piece - ball bearing is there too. Anyone able to offer help on that?

Just a note:
The Kriega Road backpack is amazing!
Avon AM26 tires are great
Iowa is boring
Riding the last 70 miles of your day in the rain suckered
Old Hondas are so cool!

I have to figure out how to post a picture from my phone...

Hrvatski,
That's great your 'Rolling' man ! I'd deal w/ that clutch right away though because it can fry your oil and cause you to burn it too quick if its slipping. You may have to remove the clutch again and re-assemble it;possibly the sequence & direction of assembly...possibly the disc's or end plate may be in wrong? I'm not sure, just my '2 cents'

Might pull it apart when we hit the big easy. I've been checking the oil at every stop (100 miles or so).

Good to hear you are on your way, hopefully you managed to jump on the route 3 river road while down near St. Louis for some scenic non-interstate riding.
Like gr said you might need to pull that clutch apart an reassemble when you get the earliest chance, slipping in 5th is not good.
Good luck on the rest of your ride and stay frosty.

We'll be rolling into NOLA tomorrow morning. Rode another 550 miles today. Thanks for the support and we'll wishes! The old Honda is still impressive and I've gotten a lot of comments and thumbs ups from passers-by.

We'll likely take the more scenic route home.
Proper oil indeed.

Yep, directions taped to the tank.
There's very little (if any) play in the lever. The adjusters on the cable are wound to the most slack position (all the way in). It seems if I move the large adjusting doo-dad Even the smallest bit counter clockwise (left) then I'm walking a fine line between slippage and poor/no engagement.

It's in a decent spot now but not perfect.

What kind of pics are you wanting to see?

Females with your bike would be ideal.  It's a good line to meet them, you need to document everyone you meet on your trip of a lifetime!

There should be at least an 1/8 or more freeplay

though you would post enroute scenic pics

We're traveling the interstate so it's not very conducive of snapping scenic pictures. I'll keep an eye out for lady folk that like old hondas :-)

I'll find something better to post than gas station stops in the near future.

Here's a pic of one of my riding buddies on his 84 Sabre.

Hrvatski,
The Trip YES !  8) How do you keep up w/ your buddy on his V65 ? I think you should do a complete re-adjust of your clutch starting w/ the lower adjuster on the engine,do it 'by the book' all the way;do you have a nice, smooth clutch cable ?
I imagine your able to keep riding through the rain;I hope the sun shines for you most of the way !
