hello all, first time poster! I've done a ton of searching around the web and this site. Found lots of good info but also looking for some more help from the CB regulars and more so my specific setup.

I got a 79 CB650 just this past weekend. original tach in a box i got with the bike shows 18k miles and the new gauges on the bike are 0'd out. PO did a ton of cosmetic things to the bike but nothing motor or carb wise. I think i have a great platform to start with. Fresh paint on wheels, new tires, new smaller gauges, new lighting, new battery, CVK carbs and stock carbs, 4 to 1 mac exhaust, and a bin full of a ton of odd and end parts for the bike. Mostly all he did was bolt whatever was easy to do on it but nothing to make her run.

So i'm trying to bring her back to life and am guessing she has sat for lord knows how long.

Current setup:
CVK Carbs
velocity stacks (no original air box when i purchased bike)
needles set in middle position #3 i believe
4 to 1 exhaust (no muffler)
at altitude (Denver Colorado)

I've been able to get the bike to crank so went ahead and pulled the carbs last night. they were BAD!!! cleaned her up really good. the only jet size i remember before putting it back together was the main jet which was 125. Needles set to #3.

Bike sorta started last night at first. Got it to somewhat idle and rev a few times. then it would idle less and less and keep dying. then i could only get it to start using the choke almost wide open. then using the choke almost as if it were the throttle itself.

I'm going to go through the carbs again soon thinking i still had something not cleaned and it moved around and clogged something again.

Looking for advice or possibly a solid direction in which to aim at with the current setup that i have. Another option is to use the stoke carbs, however they are in pieces from PO but i do have 4 rebuild kits for the stock carbs. I'd rather not go to them unless it is highly recommended due to the cleanup and work i have in the CVK ones.

Another question is once i had it somewhat running and adjusting my idle i could feel a tad bit of air coming from the head. With OHC how difficult is it to replace the head gasket?

Thanks any and all for advice!!!

JC
