Transmission/gear fluid/lube change?
« on: May 13, 2014, 06:58:26 PM »
I am new to the motorcycle scene - i have a 1978 cb550.  It is having some trouble shifting, which my friend (mechanic) believes will be cured with some simple clutch adjustments.  However, i also was curious if these bikes have transmission fluid - and if so, how do i change it.  I browsed over the manual and didn't see anything about it so i figured id ask.  Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Nothing will test your patience like owning a vintage motorcycle.

The engine, clutch, and trans share a single oil supply.  You measure the level with the dipstick/fill plug on the right side of the bike with the bike completely upright.

If your mechanic did not know this, ignore him about bike advise from now on and find a much better one.

Changing the oil is pretty simple, download the service manual here...

Be sure to use the correct oil.

How old is your clutch cable?  They stretch over time and yours may need replacement.

My friends swear by Lucas Oil Stabilizer for smoothing out hard shifting.
