Any engine paint you can paint on?
« on: May 13, 2014, 12:00:45 PM »
Cosmetically I've replaced or polished all the replaceable parts like the engine covers, clutch cover, points cover, stator cover, valve cover etc. I didn't do anything to the gray painted parts of the engine. Had I completely taken the engine apart I guess I could have blasted and painted the cylinders and the head and the block.

I'm pretty good with a fine paintbrush and I would love to know if there is any product that you can carefully paint on to touch up or at least make the block and fins look uniformly gray.

I'm not looking for a work of art like this:

I just want to make the engine not look so "tired".

Hi Jayelwin  :),
I know what you'd like to do is match your faded/discolored paint on the engine w/ some fresh touch-up paint from a can and then hope they'll blend... I've tried it and it will not look too good;now if you don't look TOO closely you may be able to get away with touching it up w/ a Very good match to stock paint that I've found.
I've used Duplicolor Engine Enamel(500 degree w/ ceramic)from a spray can and it's held up great and the color has blended well with stock OE Honda engine factory paint. The stock# is: 'DE1615 Aluminum' & got it at Autozone before.
The trick is in applying it by spraying it heavily into a large jar lid and getting it good and 'runny' in there and then using a small brush and quickly applying it one stroke at a time...
The best option though will be to prep the surface real good & mask off the places on your engine you'd like to do and then just go for it;you'll have to do lots of masking the second way(frame, etc.) I've done the first 'brush' method with good results for touch up only.  ;)

Thanks. This is exactly the advice I was looking for. For some of the larger areas like the head and jugs I might consider masking off the area with large pieces of plastic and actually spraying.

Stev-o that looks awesome. What did you do to degrease and prep the surfaces and what paint/technique did you use.

That's not a 750 right?

No, its my Kaw Z1, but recently did my K4 too [no pic].

I used Gunk Foamy Engine Cleaner to get it super clean and then a wire brush to remove any loose paint. Sand smooth if necessary, especially where bare areas meet paint. Prep is everything. Used VHT paint from Auto Zone

Just spray with WD 40 or Boesheild.

Jayelwin,
That lower picture of the completely painted engine looks Real Good (hint)
You've put in so much good work on the covers it'd look incomplete unless you paint the crankcases,IMO.  8)  ;)

Duplicolor paint and a good hot hairdryer .

Just another '80 GS1100ET basket case that hadn't ran in a fifteen years.
I got it running well and am now making it a happy bike again.  ;)
It will be a fine bike here in about a week or two.
As found...

I am concurrently working on two dead soldiers and working around parts delays. (cosmetic)
The '78 GS750B model with 21,000 original  miles, is getting a rebuilt cylinder head as it was ran into the ground with zero valve adjustments and burnt valves.
It was last registered in 2002.

As found...
