Thanks for the kind words Viktor!

I continue along at my snail's pace this winter. It was finally warm enough for me to be able open the window in the "man room" (it was actually frozen shut for almost a month).

I bought a couple little strips of insulation and used my parts washer as an "oven." I didn't have enough to cover the whole thing but I figured most of the heat would escape through the top so I focused it around there. I also removed the lid spring and I read the sticker on it later and it said it has a safety device that melts and allows the lid to shut at 160C in case you are using flammable solvent and it catches fire I guess... so probably a good thing I removed it. I only removed it because it was directly in the way of the heat gun.

I bought a Wagner 1500W heat gun which happened to fit nicely into the hole where the pump fits through.

Safety first of course ... had a fire extinguisher handy at all times. lol

It came up to 200F in about 10-15min.

And I manged to wrap the needle all the way around ... I actually had it farther than this. I figure I had it right around 280-300F which is what the Duplicolor needs (for 2hr).

Came out lookin nice.

The paint seems to be hard so hopefully it gives my engine a little more resistance to the heat than last year.

I just need to re-assemble her now and drop it back in the bike come spring time ... which is still at least 4 months away here ... ugh.

I finally made some significant progress on my re-assembly detail.

Valves installed with the new spring compressor (worked great actually). New valve guide seals just in case. Also, I've gone back to the stock springs since I sold off my CX-1 cam with HD springs to BPellerine from this forum.

Laying out all the bits to the gasket kit. One thing I did notice was you don't get new sleeve o-rings so I had to re-use mine. Fortunately mine were still nice and pliable so I don't think it will be a problem.

I had my cousin over to help me battle the cylinders back on. Made some wood spacers to hold the 2-3 pistons up and just used some popsicle sticks to depress the rings where needed. I also used a fairly liberal amount of oil on the cylinder walls this time which seems to help. We seemed to struggle a bit when we got to the 1-4 pistons because they wanted to go in cock-eyed. Tapping the top of the them with the wooden end of a hammer handle seemed to help get them back in line and it went on the rest of the way. Crank rotation was nice and smooth as you'd expect so no issues there.

New MLS head gasket (and new base gasket too with new o-rings on the oil inlet studs. One difference with the MLS gasket is you don't need to use the 8 packing rubbers or the metal dowels that go with them (so says Ken at CycleX ... lol).

Un-used dowels.

Got the head on easily enough and torqued.  I went to 18ft*lb since I have the ape studs.

The shop manual is a great asset here.

Installed the cam tower pucks with a bit of form-a-gasket.

Threw the towers on and the cam before I realized we'd need the sprocket and chain on there first. lol

We got to basically this point and then the last cam tower bolt that I was torquing stripped out ... arg. So, we tore it all down again and thankfully I had the M6x1 helicoil kit and we repaired 4 cam tower bolt holes. I also had to do a bit of fixing on one of the cam bearing stud nuts as well. While I was at it I added some form-a-gasket to the lower threads of the cam bearing cap studs since they are through holes and could potentially be a leak point.

I set the lash to stock specs (.002" intake & .003" exhaust) and here we are!

Glamour shot!

One other thing I found was when putting in the oil jet one of them didn't want to seat down all the way. On inspection, I found the port to be full of bead blasting grit! I did clean the head quite well when I got it back but just goes to show you can't be too careful with that stuff. I cleaned it out as best I could with q tips and sprayed WD-40 down the passage so I think it should all be good. I'm pretty sure I could have burned up the one side of my cam if I'd left it.  :o

Hi IW! I'm kinda new here. I haven' t really posted much but I love this forum and all the helpful people on it.! So I started looking at your build because I am also putting together a 78 with the MLS gaskets and unsure of some things.  I finally got the nerve up last night to glue my bottom end together! Still not 100% sure my rods are facing the right way but from what I can tell from your pic and one other I could find I should be ok. Anyway, the reason I am posting is, while I was looking at the picture of your headgasket, I noticed that the alignment of it looks a little off around the front side of the chain area. Is that just an illusion? It almost looks like that bolt hole is covered?

Ya it does look that way from the pics... I believe I flipped it after the pic was taken to make sure the alignment was correct.

Spring has been suuuppppppeeerrrr slow to arrive this year. I did manage to convince a friend to help me carry my engine down, load up my bike and engine, haul it all over to my uncle's garage (cause it was still freezing out at the time), get the engine back in the frame, and haul it all back here. I owe him big time.

Now all I've got left is to throw the exhaust on, hook up all the connections behind the headlight, get the battery in, and oil/filter etc. Since it's too #$%*ty to work outside today I figured I'd take the time to polish some chrome:

I used some Wolfgang Swirl Remover (a detailing product) and some #0000 steel wool by hand. As you can see it worked quite well! No before pics but it lots of road grime/crud and carbon near the tips etc.

One step closer to get riding. I was really hoping to get it out this weekend for a bday ride but it's supposed to rain and possibly snow this weekend ...  :o

I feel your pain iron worker. Got 6 inches of wet heavy snow around yorkton over the weekend. We did not need that! That's 2 long hard winters in a row. Thankfully lots of that snow melted over the last few days. Your exhaust looks great :D Where did you pick up the polish?
