Top end tear down, need some advice, photos
« on: May 17, 2014, 04:55:42 PM »
First, my bike is a 77 cb550 f-something.

1. I have to redo the threading on the #2 spark port. The damn plug is stuck. Is there a way to try and salvage the threading before doing something drastic (like machining a hole)?

Overall I've been quite impressed with what I've run into on this bike. All the metal is bright and shiny with no scoring with some exceptions:

1. The valve stems look corroded (see pics). My thoughts are to try CLR, any better ideas?

2. The top of the pistons look pretty corroded as well, but not nearly as bad as the stems (I'm showing the worst one in the pics). I'm pretty sure I can salvage these guys with CLR, but again, better thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Nate

For the plug..........since the head is off............soak both sides of the threads before trying again.  If you strip the threads...........go to a pro and use a Time-Cert for threads that can be used for a long time.

I don't know about cleaning valve-stems...........but the heads (faces) and the pistons will soak clean............do not use a sharp tool to scrape the grunge away. Check the valve-seats for any rust or pitting.
