New member saying hello from Manchester, UK
« on: May 17, 2014, 07:48:46 PM »
I've skulked around here long enough like a peeping tom looking in your windows seeing what everyone is up to, so it's about time I came in, said hello, admitted that I've been stealing some of your know-how and asked for as much help as you're all willing to give me!
Quick history - my dad rode trials, scrambles and grasstrack in the 50s and 60s when it was all done on the same bike - he was good enough to have a trophy cabinet full from local competitions - so my brother and I always liked bikes from an early age. My brother had bikes and I used to sneak out on his BSA Starfire, Royal Enfield Turbo Twin or my dad's Ossa when they weren't about. I came back to motorcycles 20 years ago when my brother's wife was pregnant and I bought her Kawasaki KC100, followed it with a Suzuki GS500, then a CBR 600 FM, and a Triumph Speed Triple t509. The Speed Triple breaking down one day made me realise how little I knew about the technical side - the fuel pump wasn't pumping at high enough pressure....I'd never have sorted that, so i bought a Honda CM400t to gain some knowledge - it barely ran, carbs leaked, wiring was all over the shop and spewing out of the damaged headlight, fixed the faults, trimmed it down and made a new (much smaller) seat and sold it on - that was 2 years ago and it still starts first time, every time, apparently.
I bought a CB550K3 two years ago, but hurt my back the day I collected it, meaning that nothing was done for nearly a year. It's time to sort it.
I'm looking forward to asking stupid questions about how to sort out my bag of bits.
Regards, ecurb
if I can, I'll post a picture on the day of collection.

Welcome!  As you already know, lots of good info here to help sort things out.  BTW are you a United fan?

Ha Ha, didn't we all !!! Welcome ! I used to do a lot of work with ICL out at Gorton, used to love Manchester for the best curries around. Nothing like good British fare I say.

Curry & Chips?

Curry, rice and chips. And a bottle of Kingfisher. A veritable banquet.

Pop in to www.sohc.co.uk and chat to the UK mob. Use the same username so that we recognise you.

Kev, your pint is a poof....I've gone all metric! - What kind of vfourfreak are you? Picked a '95 VFR 750 from York last week for a friend and took it down to him in Gloucester the other day...I can't believe what you can get for £1000!
I'm South Manchester and Rusholme is about halfway into town from me. The local curry houses to me are all Nepalese - Chilli paneer, lamb handi, boti kebab...no lies.
And John Willie Lees brewery here even brews its own 'Nepalese' beer now!

And, really, the etiquette is that it's only half rice, half chips when you're getting a take out!

HondanutRider, if i support anyone it's Hull City, my original home town, and some would say we were cruelly robbed in the FA Cup Final yesterday, others would say we threw it away.

and Steve, I'll come and say hello on www.sohc.co.uk.

thanks for making me welcome - I suppose I ought to build something now!

Thanks, Stev-O
All the extra 'white stuff' was the first thing to go.
Partly for space reasons - only got a 10' x 8' storage space and there's another bike in there and all the other stuff I seem to accumulate - but also because the panniers look like toilet cisterns....

Never heard them described quite like that but totally agree!

Bet it looks like a different bike.

Completely different, the bad news is that the bodywork distracted from the flakey paint and rust....on the plus side i got a new bit of plumbing for the garage!

Those old Rickman panniers should sell easily on eBay.

Well, back in the day when I worked in Bangalore I was happy to have a Kingfisher after a hard day's slog, harrumph, grumble, etc etc

RC30 and NC35 freak, and an NSR250 in a million pieces.
