My Son's First Bike - 1977 CB550
« on: May 18, 2014, 06:30:30 AM »
My 23 year old son Joey has always loved my '74 750 Four, so when he got his learner's permit a month ago, we started searching for an older bike.  After a few dead ends, I found a '77 550 in a nearby town.  The listed price was very reasonable and as a result, the seller was inudated with calls.  I convinced him to let me see it that night, so I showed up with cash and my trailer.

The bike was in overall decent shape, but needed the usual stuff - battery,  brake work, carbs cleaned, etc.  I had a battery and confirmed that the electricals all worked.  The tires were in surprisingly good shape with decent tread and no cracks.  The #1 exhaust pipe was rotted, but the rest are pristine.  I told the seller that it needed some considerable work and that my son had a limited budget to work with.  He wanted the bike to go to a good home, so he gave it to me for $350.  It came with a title, tool kit, and owner's manual.  Can't beat that deal.

This was all done on the hush hush - my son knew nothing about it.  I dropped the bike off at a friend's house and since he had Friday off, he pulled the carbs and gave them a good cleaning.  We put a new battery in and it fired up within a short time.  Yesterday I drove over with Joey under the ruse that my friend had some sort of surprise he wanted to show us.  The 550 was sitting in the driveway when we arrived and my son was thrilled.  We demonstrated how it starts right up and idles nicely now.

Here's a shot of the bike before I brought it home:

The first thing to come off was that hideous backrest and then we removed the incorect rear turn signals.  The correct rear turn signals are on the bike now.

Later today I'll pick up the bike and it will be brought into my shop for a two-three week go-through.  We'll replace the fork seals, rebuild the master cylinder and caliper, and try to replace any of the broken or modified pieces that are needed.  For example, a PO cut the front footpeg brackets to make them shorter, then welded them back together.   :-\

If any of you have parts that you're willing to sell, here's the partial list:

#1 exhaust pipe
Front peg brackets
Grab bar
brake pedal (original is badly bent)

If you prefer, I'd be willing to trade some powder coating services for parts.  I specialize in Honda parts.

It will be my son's job to take care of the cleaning and polishing, and he will assist with the remaining mechanical work that's needed.

Soon we'll be able to ride together on our old SOHC's.  I'm really looking forward to it.   :)

P.S.  I'm not having any luck downloading a service manual from this site.  Can someone direct me to where I can find one.  There wasn't one listed in the manual download thread.  Thanks!

Nice buy and a great first bike for your Son. How many miles are on it ?  As for the tires may want to check the date code on them just to see how old they actually are.

There's a little over 15K on the clock.  We already adjusted the valves and just need to check the cam chain tension.  Good point on the tires.  They've got to be at least 4 or 5 years old based on the history of when it was last ridden and the amount of tread left.

Beautiful bike--aside from the backrest. I hope your son appreciates it. I am afraid my son will trade mine for an I-phone once I am gone.

In the US cars have generally been cheap and plentiful, so basic transportation has always meant a car, motorcycles have mostly been recreational here. So people would buy these inexpensive motorcycles, often on something of a whim, thinking it would be cool and fun to have a motorcycle (which of course it is).

Then they would discover the reality of owning a motorcycle. That it can be uncomfortable to ride in the heat and that it's not a lot of fun to get rained on. They may decide that they just aren't comfortable in traffic or they rode it a few years then had kids and decided it was too dangerous (or their spouse decided).  So they just stopped riding and left it in a corner of the garage or in a shed.

Thanks for explaining. When I compare the prices back then (US and Europe) and make a rough guess about the general cost of living, it is clear the purchase of such a bike didn't have the effect on your budget it had here. Anyway, you guys are lucky to have this arsenal of old new bikes. Wouldn't mind to explore myself and do such a barn find. Congrats again. The bike looks great. The stepped seat is from a K4 I believe. For me, 6.6, the K3 with the unstepped seat offered the best riding position by far. What I didn't like however is that Honda made the stuffing of the seat softer than before.

My son totally appreciates the bike.  He loves my '74 750 and told me that he wanted a 70's Honda when he got his first bike.  This was the perfect solution and will give us the opportunity to work on it together.  He has watched me restore a number of bikes and appreciates the fact that I brought them back to stock condition.  He preferes stock as well, so this bike will never get molested.

What a great deal! I've got my 550 in Boston and while it's being torn-down at the moment it is a great first bike. I'll see what I have laying around for parts…I know I've got plenty of motor components but I'll search for some of the bits you need.

Cheers,
Alex

After picking away at various items that my son's 550 needed done to it, it's now running well and ready to register.  Here she is:

It was a great father-son project since we did most of the work together.  We cleaned and polished many parts, replaced the fork seals, rebuilt the caliper and master cylinder, adjusted the rear brakes, cleaned and lubricated the chain, then installed and adjusted it, replaced the rotted #1 muffler, installed the rear grab bar and turn signals, replaced the damaged brake pedal and footpegs, replaced the petcock, and spent several hours diagnosing and fixing the issue preventing cylinders #2 & 3 from firing.

While the forks were apart, he did a nice job polishing the legs.  Then I powder coated them with a beautiful super high gloss clear finish.  No more corrosion to deal with.

He wants to recover the seat with an original style repro cover and pick away at various items still needing polishing.  Overall, though, we're very happy with how it came out and he was thrilled to finally ride it up and down our street multiple times.  He's taking the motorrcycle safety course in a couple weeks and then we can start riding together.

Thanks to everyone here who helped with parts and advice.

Great job polishing the forks, is the clutch cover next?

I recovered my '78 seat with a cover from:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-CB550K-Four-Seat-Cover-1978-CB550-Four-K-in-25-COLORS-W-ST-P-E-/161326936743?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item258fd5b2a7

I was very pleased with the results:

Note: I reused the strap and the chrome trim from the original seat.

Thanks!  The clutch cover is definitely one of the next parts to be polished - my son made it clear that he wants to tackle it.

Your recovered seat looks great.  We'll have to find a ratty seat with decent chrome trim and buckles, since his came with none.  I guess I'll have to start watching eBay...unless someone here has a seat that they're willing to part with.

My son and I finally took our first ride together today.  It was a beautiful afternoon and perfect for a ride around the Wachusett Reservoir, which is surrounded by West Boylston, Clinton, Boylston, and possibly a bit of Worcester.  We stopped at the old Clinton Dam for a picture and then headed home from there.

Even though this was his first real ride, he did great and he loved it.   This was a special ride that we'll always remember.

My dad is still alive and got me into motorcycles (and British sports cars). But somehow we never rode together when I was young and when I got bike in riding 8 years ago it was because he couldn't ride any more due to his Parkinson's and so I bought his bike from him.

I'm sorry you didn't get to ride with your dad.  As we all know, it's impossible to describe to a non-rider exactly what the experience is like and why we love it so much.  You have to do it to understand.  I explained that to my son long ago.  When we finally got to ride on Sunday, I mentioned to it to him afterwards and he agreed that there's no true way to describe the experience and the thrill.

Great quote from The Outlaw Josey Wales, by the way - one of my favorites.  I thought Chief Dan George nearly stole the show.

Funny.  When I was 23 I bought my first bike.
It also was a 550.
...and my name is Joey.
