Checking oil 550f
« on: May 21, 2014, 05:31:48 AM »
This should be easy to answer I hope. Want to check the oil level on the bike. Usually on my bikes, unscrew the cap when bike is warm, place dip stick back in , check level.
As I did about 100 kilometres after  changing oil and hitting the road for the first time,so went to check oil level, did it the usual way, cap resting on top, no oil on the stick, so screwed it back in , took it out and full.
So take the level with cap screwed in or just resting on the top? Hot or cold, warm after resting for a few minutes or 10?
Advice please, sounds simple, but does not tell me in my manuals.
Thanks

After a ride, bike on center stand.  Go grab a cold beer, come back and check the the stick resting, not screw into the clutch cover.  Have some more beer

Ok thanks, is that one beer before the check? If so what size? Is the speed of drinking affected by thirst or the heat of the day? You have now made this very complicated! Should I drink tea before midday?
Now you have me confused!

You don't have the owner's manual?

Have original owners manual and two workshop manuals. I know how to check oil, but was not sure on this model if you check with it screwed in or resting on the case. It says to check the oil level, but not exactly the procedure.
It does not cost to double check with the experts. It would seem I got the answer to the oil, but not the drinking part. ;)

The owner's manual does state the procedure.

When putting oil in a 550 several of the 550 owners on this forum have experienced oil leakage when the bike was filled to the full mark or overfilled.  The leaking in my bike stopped when I began filling the oil to just under the full mark.  If mine is not full it will not blow oil out the top of the cylinder.  Overfill and oil comes out and migrates past the openings where the plug on the left outboard cylinder sits.  It then gathers on the top fin and will eventually make a trail on the motor.

My bike did have oil in that area when I got it,  I will keep this in mind. Done a couple hundred kilometres and waiting to see if the oil reappears.
Thanks to all posts, basic question, but the things you pick up are so important.
