Question about clutch/transmission problem - 1976 GL1000
« on: May 20, 2014, 05:55:21 AM »
I came across a bike for sale that is reported that the "clutch stopped working".  When queried further, the owner reports: "You can run through the gears but it wont go into any gear.  If you don't put the clutch you can hear the gears trying to mesh."

Doesn't sound like the owner knows too much about diagnosing problems, but from the vague description given does anyone have idea about what might be needing repair?

the clutches are tough in the wings. I bet he has a broken u joint in the drive shaft. Put it on the center stand put it in gear and see of the back tire grabs and turns the engine.

Good suggestion.  If it wasn't so far away I might want to check it out.  I'm sure a better inspection would be able to diagnose what might be broken.  The last thing I would be leery of is if the transmission was broken and needed to be torn open.

Yes, his asking price is less than $1K OBO, and the bike looks to have a lot of recent cosmetic upgrades/changes that may make it attractive (e.g. custom paint & fenders).
