CB750 "Barn" find
« on: May 21, 2014, 06:46:49 PM »
I got this back at a yard sale two years ago and am trying to get it back on the road.
The carbs are going to need some work and the tank needs cleaning but it looks
nice for sitting in a garage/field most its life

She looks pretty complete...except for the stupid seat previous owners put on those bikes back then...makes me puke in my mouth :) Do not get to excited about the carbs. They really are not so bad. Just take pics as you remove and clean them. At tip...if the pins holding the floats are stuck do not force them or you will break off the holding tab...then you are looking for more carbs. If you have problems consult the board...there is a lot of guys here willing to provide advise...welcome to the forum.

I'm thinking about getting Hondaman's book on getting them back on the road, sounds like
a good read. Anyone have a chance to look at it ? Since its a high dollar book i'd like to
get someones opinion of it

Eww, yeah.  Those seats are hideous.  We burned the one that was on my 550.  Get a repo or find a authentic one.  Great bike too.

Yes, I have the book, it is very good.

But honestly, whenever I need info, I just do a search here.

The book is nice if you want it and want something in your hands to work with and know it is accurate. If you search you can find anything on here tho. It is probably more of a want than a need. I have one tho and its good, I like pretty pictures

Anyways, careful with those pipes. Hopefully they are solid and not see through, worth some cash

Looks like a very nice foundation for a start. What year is it a 73 or 74. How many miles are on the clock ?
Wish I could find one like that at a yard sale, never know when one might pop up though ;)

xelose...take a look at the neck (steering stem) of the bike on the right side. You should see a plate which will have the VIN on it. You will see in one corner a month and year like 5/74...that will give you the month and year the bike was built in Japan. It is possible it was built in 73 and titled in 74. Send us more pics when you get it off the trailer. So what made you decide to start working on it after 2 years?

I am cleaning out my storage unit and decided it was time to either get it on the road or
find someone who would. Also have a 1983 venture in there waiting to have the exhaust
but back together. As it stands i only have $125 in the bike, plus the $20 for the pioneer
plates and some registration. The odometer is showing 1428 miles. Which would make
sense as the guy i bought it from had it passed to him from his dad, who only drove
it into town and back for a total of 14 miles

11/72 date would make it a 73 MY or K3.  I'm missing K3 in my bikes list and wouldn't mind taking it off your hand

Very nice. But curious... the sidecover wing emblem is on backwards. Someone had to take the time to remove them and replace them on opposite sides.

What a PO will do.   ;)

not frozen at all, its started once but wont run. When the tank gets cleaned, and carbs rebuilt i'll look at other reasons
so far it seems they are flooding. This weekend i'm getting a jobox and bench to work on since im in an apartment
and kids like shiny things. Really trying to keep only one iron in the fire this season and get it complete.

Once the process starts i'll make a post in the rebuilding section.

Your carbs will need to be cleaned and rebuilt. The floats could be stuck causing them to overflow...

That is a GREAT find and an amazing deal.  Don't sell it unless you don't plan to ride it, as you'll be sorry later.  Congrats on an awesome find.

Eric, you are absolutely the LAST person who should complain about not finding SOHC4's at yard sales. LOL

When you do dhte carbs, just get gaskets, you don't need to buy a kit that includes jets and needles. You really can't trust the brass parts in most kits to be the sizes that they say they are.

Over all the exhaust looks good, one of the heat shields looks bent but shouldn't take much to correct later.
My big thing ATM is getting these carbs out and cleaned. Also have a set of carbs off a 78, would that see
any performance increase on my stock 73?

Looks like a repaint on the side covers Ron. The painter probably paid no attention to that minute that we catch all the time!! That's a sweet bike. Low,low miles is good but it will need to be cleaned out and inspected. Just sitting can cause problems also.

Yes, on closer inspection, something happened, probably a sidecover repaint. Inattentive painter.
