CB400/4 Smokin from Cam cover vent
« on: September 18, 2006, 05:03:03 AM »
When my 1977 CB400/4 get warm I get oil smoke from the vent pipe down by the swinging arm, the Pistons and Rings were replaced by the previous owner, so I it looks like a top end rebuild comming up, the question is how hard is it to push out the valve guides, is it a home garage job or send the head to a specialist??   ???

Pushing them out and in is possible BUT they need reaming afterwards and the seats cut which is a GOOD machine shop job. Guides dont normally cause oil at breather, usually pistons and/or bores---just cos it was done dont make it right
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

My breather smokes pretty good to, but it has since I bought the bike a year ago.
I will attend to it when the bike wont run anymore  ;D

My 400F does the same thing. VERY LITTLE. Engine has just been rebuilt. VERY sound, 1k miles on it. I would say the breather is doing its job.

word to the wize...:) watch out for the oily vent plugging!
I had a cm200 years ago, a mouse made a nest in the airbox where the vent connected.
the oily residue mixed with the mouse mess and plugged the vent. The resut was blowing out the shifter seal which coated the rear wheel with oil. didn't know it happened until I made that squirly left turn!
