Yet another CB650 Charging issue....
« on: September 18, 2006, 07:13:29 PM »
Greetings everyone! This site has been so helpful for me that I figured I'd better join up! I bought a 81 CB650 in July and I've been working the bugs out of it. After a new battery & some fresh gas, it fired up after a few revolutions & runs great-no smoke of ANY kind whatsoever. Now to get the bike to stay charged. I started with the rectifier. Strike one. Then, I figured I'd better read some instructions. My rotor measured 0.5 ohms so I bought one on e-bay that is actually an aftermarket unit from a bike that was being parted out. I checked the ohms on this one and they read 3.9. Fired it up last weekend, and STILL no charge! Is it possible that it MUST be at least 4.0 to work correctly? These units apparantly are self-excited, so in theory it should charge even if, say I had a defective starter relay? I had taken the relay apart to clean the contacts and now when I hit the starter button, the lights dim, but it does not even click. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Rotor resistance between 2 ohms and 6 ohms is good.  The rest of your post doesn't sound like a charging issue.   :)
