Topic: How stopped is a stop?

Red lights and waiting in lines are obvious, but a simple stop sign with no one else around?  I cruise up & stop, but find I just balance in place for a second - OK maybe only a fraction of a second - OK maybe just a bit of a roll, but essentially a stop.  I don't often put my foot down is the point.  Do you have to plant a foot to make it 'legal' or is hanging in place OK?

I believe in IL, the vehicle must be stationary for a 3 sec. rule. No #$%*!

i err on the side of caution - there are too many cages in my n'hood that blow reds all the time...but if i know for sure it's clear i will stay in first and dip a foot.

I think if we look at our own idvidual state laws. The rule is about the same in all states. Besides, like junkie said about hazardous cagers. This 1 foot 2 seconds rule does make sense doesn't it?

I look around real good, and do err on the side of caution.  However, just to get to the local grocery store, I must pass through 14 stop signs in less than 1 mile.  14.  And one of them is on a curve with no intersection; just stop, baby.  I suspect that's my most 'roll' one as there's no one coming what with no intersection and all.  My town makes judicious use of them as speed enforcement devices.

the MSF trained me to pause and balance, so for the cops that's all i do.  but the stos that fall into the category of the cops being my motivation are few and far between.  most of the time i want to put a foot down and see who wants to kill me.  no brainer there

Here in BC the rule is very simple. You must come to a complete stop and adopt the 'three point' stance, ie left foot down, right foot up on the peg, covering the rear brake (brake light on).

Just watched a fellow on a 750 Virago do his road test. Two feet down at every stop, holding the front brake and trying to do smooth throttle operation at the same time. He didn't pass.

In have made up my own stopping rules:

If it is earliy morning, dusk, or dark - complete 3 second stop.

If I am clearly all alone at an intersection - rolling stop.

If I am in heavy traffic at a four way - stop and wait my turn.

If I am at an intersection and a hot wench is in a near by car - ten second stop and a crack of the throttle!

more or less follow sparty's rules
if i'm in my neighborhood, and there's clearly no one else there, my feet stay on the pegs
if there's _anyone_ else around, foot down, and usually wave the guy through

In the UK we generally have very few STOP junctions. When they say stop there is generally a very good reason (plus it's a pull if you don't actually come to halt)

Most junctions are HALT, which means "stop if you have to"

Which makes a lot of sense. The only reason we have Stop signs everywhere (which few people stop at) is so that when there is an accident the Mounties can apportion blame.

I spent some time with my Uncle in Beaconsfield (Montreal, not Buckinghamshire). The locality was a grid with 4 way stops at every junction...

We have mini roundabouts up north in built up areas Steve, no Halt road signs ….you can just go over them, if the roads’s clear, can’ t understand why other counties don’t use them.

We're going to get our first roundabout here in Ann Arbor with the completion of the new high school. It will be in front of the school and just off a very busy limited access highway. I can't wait to see how the kiddies handle this.

We’ve been getting bombed for many years over in the UK so I like the camera stuff….and big roundabouts are cool in the city. You don’t even have to slow down much for a right turn.

Enjoy your roundabout Bob they’re fun!!!! But go when it’s quiet and see how easy the system works once you get the hang of it…….its a great way to go through a road junctions.

we had them in kenya when i was a kid (brit colony) and i recently enjoyed the easy turning on my road trip into Wales...
they really are great, but they freak my mom out.

she's just failed her driving test for the 2nd time.  god knows you are better off without her driving around over there...

In the UK Bob you yield (give way) for people who are on the RaB,  if it’s clear to the right you just go through onto your turn off road…..they rock! we have a double here in my city and wow it's fun if the road is quiet
