Roundabout/traffic circle, call it what you like. I love 'em, and wish there were more hereabouts as they do make an efficient way of keeping traffic moving....and there is no pandemonium if there is a power cut/outage!

FWIW the first major roundabout was built in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, in 19don't-know-when to ease traffic through the town centre.

I am curious to see how it works when traffic is very congested. I would think it requires a certain amount of cooperative courtesy on every one's part and there isn't as much of that around here as I would like.
Gee, I guess it depends on where you put them.  Boston is the land of roundabouts (we call 'em traffic circles).  If you've ever seen figure 8 racing, that would pretty much describe Boston traffic circles.  Conceivably, traffic in the circle is supposed to have the right of way, but everyone entering tries to cut off everyone else.  I guess you could call that "cooperation" of a sort.

I don't cut people off; however, I'm not good at being cut off.  While I was there, I developed the sure-fire method for maintaining right of way while in the circle.  Most drivers try to race for the gap before getting cut off.  Instead, I accellerate and aim directly at the door of the driver who is creeping out and thinking about cutting me off.  It freaks them out, and I only had it fail once or twice.  It sounds dangerous, but is actually much safer than it seems.  8)

Note: Don't try this on your bike.

The few traffic circles/round-a-bouts around here all seem to have 'STOP' signs at every entry.  Not only does that kinda defeat the whole flow-of-traffic purpose, but those already in still don't get the right-of-way because the traffic signs are taken more as a suggestion rather than the law.  Our version are death-traps.

As this thread has morphed into a discussion about roundabouts, here's a previous thread (about shocks) that discussed the "Magic Roundabout" in UK:

Sorry to have gotten us off topic Forum master, I shall try not to go off on tangents from now on if you like to think in a linear fashion.

The Open Forum was put up especially for stuff like this (gently meandering discussions that head off in many directions).

Just don't try it in the Tech Forum  ;D

Hard to think in a straight linear fashion when we're talking about roundabouts.
