Points or Dyna S on CB650?
« on: May 26, 2014, 10:39:03 PM »
Trying to get rid of the ignitor boxes and finicky ignition and wondering if it's possible to run tried and true points or a Dyna S with a 1979 CB650? I plan on running Dyna coils as well. Thanks for any help.

I'm not seeing how that will work in replacing the ignitors, perhaps I just don't understand it.

It looks like this guy is/was running a Dyna S right to the coils like I'm trying to do: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=17895.0

I'll have to see if the plate for the Dyna S bolts right on to a 650. Is so, I forget which Dyna coils I need when running with the Dyna S, 3ohm or 5ohm?

It is hybrid. Instead of carrying the entire voltage of the spark across the points, they are 12 volt switches that trigger the transistorized ignition of the HondaMan unit.

Much simpler to install, can be disabled to run on just the points in minutes on the side of the road, and is very reliable.

Uses around 5w, keeping the load down on the limited power the alternators produce.

Oh, and a damn sight cheaper too.

Other CB650 owners might chime in if they have tested Dyna S.
The charging system must be able to cope with Dyna S and 3 ohm coils. My bike (CB750) did not, battery drained rather quick with headlight on.
Changed to Dyna 5 ohm coils almost direct, max 40 minute test drive, 20 with headlight on. Engine barely started on starter when returned back, and needed to start bike again to drive into the garage. Returned the coils to my local shop for 5 ohms.
