Australian sellers for 400/4
« on: May 26, 2014, 01:48:21 PM »
Hi everyone, I am currently in the process of bringing an old cb400 four back to life and will need to start ordering bits and pieces. I know of the companies overseas like DSS, DCC, but am looking to try and buy local here in Australia first if the price is right before I go spending on postage costs.
Can anyone tell me of any reputable shops or companies I can deal with for parts here in Oz?
Thanks in advance, JP

It won't take you long to unfortunately figure out that most parts bought here are more expensive than purchasing internationally.

I buy everything for my 750's from overseas, Yamiya in Japan, CMSNL in Netherlands, David Silver spares in the UK, and a number of places in the US, all cheaper than buying here.... The added bonus is, waiting for packages in the mail, its like a whole lot of little Christmases.... ;D ;)  For the 400 try TTR400 in Africa, he's a member here and has some great stuff for the 400... {I think his name is Kevin..?}

+1 on what hotdog and retro said,  its a pity really  but as retro said its like a little xmass when a parcel turns up.   Although recently when the courier van pulls up out the front of my place i get all excited then he goes across the road with a parcel, none for me, at the moment 2 are missing and i dont expect to see one of them , paypal takes some of the worry out of it.

Gday mate
I order alot of my stuff from Western Honda in Arizona I think.
I get it sent to a re shipping company in America and they send it out to me.
I priced up Honda parts on ebay and then went straight to Honda myself and saved about 30 percent.

Be a slightly more involved member and most of us stateside guys will set you up/help out with parts. I don't much care about re-mailing a package and getting reimbursed/fronted the money but seem people idk, no faith

Ok thanks everyone, I was kinda hoping on saving on some of the postage costs but I guess this is the way it has to be. I do like the idea of little Christmas's coming every now and then when the parcel man arrives haha  ;D
Anyway thanks again, I'll start my research on where I can get the best deals with parts plus postage to north queensland.

we check in with each other if we want to buy something and see if someone else does as well, shares the postage which isn't really much depending what you've bought, for example you wouldnt buy a battery or chain and sprockets from overseas?

Gday Ken
I'm sure there are plenty of companies that offer this type of service.
The one I chose is called "Re ship"
Once registered (a little bit fiddly) they give you an address to get your parts shipped too within USA.  Shipping from the Honda dealer I use is $12 flat fee with in USA.  Once the box arrives at the re shipping company they email me to let me know they have a parcel for me and give me 3 to 5 options for delivery to Australia.  These options are with 2 or 3 different carriers and the cost varies depending on how fast I want it.
The fee payable to "Re ship" is $5 to re label the package plus the delivery method that I chose   They can combine packages at a cost of $5 each which I have never tried yet.  The thing I liked about this company is that there is no monthly membership fee which from memory some places charge you whilst not charging you a $5 handling fee.

The last package I got sent out took a day or two from Arizona to my re shipper in Portland and then only 2 and half days from Portland to Sydney. I get it sent to my mates work as I know there will be some body there to take delivery and I'm not sure if the package has to be signed for or not.

The Honda dealer I use has a very easy to navigate web site with year model and bike model all broken down onto what looks like the old type of micro fish with all prices listed for parts available. A couple of times I have rang up to ask questions and the dude in spare parts named Spencer is only too willing to help

Geez Scott that is awesome service to get you parcel in 4-5 days from the states! I've waited longer to get parcels delivered from Victoria to Townsville! I will definately look this up mate. Thanks for the advice.

It is surprising what you can get from the local Honda dealer. I have got some parts if not over the top, seals etc because of the US postage costs. UK postage is often much better value.
As for first class mail in the US, many ebay sellers don't even realise it exists. I have often pointed out to the seller if they will send the part this way, I will buy it and are only too happy to send it, but I think you are not covered by insurance, so not too costly parts worth the risk, but I am yet not to receive an item.
Many Americans do not seem to know how to use the USPS web site, go there and see why. It is the worst site to navigate. Number one problem, if your after a price, always takes you to the highest price first, you got to scroll to find the best price. Took me ages to work the site out, but they must of worked out I broke the code and made it even more difficult! USPS also do pre paid international boxes of different sizes, so if you are buying a lot of smaller parts from the one seller, this can be a more cost efficient way.
You can try Puds 4 parts in Victoria. I just got a carb kit from him for the honda 550, but many parts were not correct, could of got the same kit from the US with same parts for half the price, but was impatient, won't do that again.
There are many wreckers about, but you got to search and do a lot of ringing about. You could try Old Gold Motorcycles in Western Sydney and the is Jap Spares on the south coast of NSW.
You could also get a price from the guys who ship bikes in from the States for larger parts, I used  Dead Dog Racing in Qlds to bring a bike in from the USA and he bought parts I needed across for me. There is also a guy around Tweed Heads who imports bikes for others as well as his own, he may also bring parts in for you, you can only try, got to think outside the square sometimes.
Hope this helps and not an overload of info.

Puds 4 parts

Puds is expensive as far as prices go as are most parts suppliers here, He also mostly does 750's.  I've been buying parts from the USA for 10 years or more now and its hands down cheaper than buying anything here. Sometimes I wait 4 weeks, sometimes its 4-5 days, I don't really care, the whole point is that its far cheaper than buying from here. I also use USPS and have NEVER had a problem with them {yet}, I have never had to use their site for anything more than tracking, if I have trouble with a US ebayer I get a forum member to help out, never had a problem at all.. Dave 500 {Gold Coast} buys everything from David Silver Spares in the UK {500-550}, they have a great selection of, and specialize in 400 Honda parts.   ;)

Yes I know o/s is cheaper, but sometimes it is cheaper to go to the Honda dealer for small parts due to shipping costs on a $10 part. I bought from Puds as so close to having the bike on the road, but won't do that again.
As I said I have studied the USPS site, never had trouble with their postage, their website is crap.
Many sellers are not aware of cheaper shipping methods with USPS and when it is pointed out to them that they are missing out on O/S sales, most are more than happy to help out, doesn't cost anything to ask. I have imported stuff through importers and if you have large items, you can get them sent to them in the States for local postage and then sent in there container, again, you only have to ask to compare with postage costs. As I am only new to Honda SOHC/4's and too this site, I have not yet built up any relationships with O/S owners to help out, I am also not the type of person to ask others to help me out.
My main point is there are other ways and that some small time ebay sellers are willing to help out if directed to cheaper methods of postage, that's all.

Don't be shy to ask for help mate, thats what this whole site is about, if you don't ask and ending up paying more for it then i don't know what to say. I just paid a member here to send me over a complete 900 Honda front brake set up for one of my builds, I've done similar things with at least 10 other members, never found anyone not willing to help.... ;D ;)  It looks like you were getting a bit defensive their mate, no need to , i was only making suggestions and trying to help, I've spent around 20 grand on parts and mostly through this site and have made some great friends in the process... ;)  PM me if you ever need a contact...

JP,

I started work on my CB400F in Townsville, and finished here in Rockhampton. Both Honda dealers had very limited access to small consumable items, and these were usually much more expensive than bundled up in an order of several items from David Silvers in UK. I have used Silvers for everything from exhaust to oil filters over the years. When their US site first opened I inadvertedly ordered from it - reasonable price, however delivery time was longer from the US.

Good luck with your project. You will find this and other forums a great help. Mine was started in the days before I had access to the web - information and parts are so much easier to get hold of now.

Cheers,

Justin

G'day rockvegas400, yeah I know what you mean mate.....I checked out the local Honda dealers for a price comparison check and it blew my mind just how much more expensive it is! Set of standard piston rings from honda were $77 each....I've ordered 4 from 4into1 in the US for $80 + $10 shipping! Can't beat that.
Anyway I am slowly getting my head around where to buy from online as there is quite a bit of options. The one thing I am struggling to find is that bloody clutch lock nut removal socket tool....and it's doing my head in haha. I'll find one soon enough.
I'm just glad I have the internet to search for everything I need, I don't know how you did it without the net. Well done on that.

Take it easy JP

When I started things went very slowly - money, kids and having Just Bikes as my only real link to parts, all contributed.  The net helped in locating parts, as well as being a great source of advice and reference material.

Re your clutch - is this what you're looking for?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251421800555?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

It's possible other members may have built their own tools to deal with this. I haven't had to pull down my motor as yet and so have not run into your challenge.

Happy to help with anything else I can. On this forum we are relative next door neighbours!

Cheers,

G'day JP
If that tool is not what you are looking for I bought some specialised Honda tools from a bloke in the UK off ebay.
He makes them himself and I have been happy with the quality.
Sorry I don't know how to do a link.

There is someone in Qld selling one for about $20.
There will be more to choose from if you try ebay in UK or USA
