Open Trailer vs Enclosed Trailer?
« on: June 19, 2014, 07:35:48 AM »
I use to have a pickup truck when I had my other bikes but have since moved to enclosed SUV ownership.

I always figured a trailer would be easier to load and unload, plus I could use it to haul other items as well.  I'm stuck between an enclosed trailer vs an open trailer.

I travel to NYC from time to time to drop of items at a shipping company and the trailer would be useful but I'm worried about an empty enclosed trailer and some of the bridges along 95 should the weather go funky and any bridge restrictions come into play.

An open trailer would keep all my goodies exposed to the elements, road debris and vandals but would be cheaper and arguably easier to handle on windy bridges.

Any suggestions? Tips? Thoughts?

I have one of each and it boils down to what you may be hauling. If your hauling dirt, landscape debri and non valuable items etc. or occasional bike pick up etc an open trailer is a good option. An enclosed trailer is pretty tough to beat for protection and security plus its a handy place to sleep if your hauling a bike on a long road adventure or camping trip   ;)
Whatever kind you get, get the best tongue locks available to secure it, chain the wheels or any other measures to deter as they can be popular with thieves.
