It turns over just fine with the nut and the electric starter.

Larry, you must mean the circlip on the kickstart shaft on the outer part of the right side case behind the clutch? if that happened it could keep the kickstarter gear from meshing & engaging correctly or out of alignment inside the cases.I hope it's as easy as just locking on a new circlip  ;)

Ok...I cut a spare cover in half so that should solve the oil running out of the engine issue.  Still have to pull the right cover off to inspect why the kick start isn't engaging.  I am hoping that the circlip just popped out of its groove.

Pretty sure that is what happened, at least I hope it is that simple for Harsh...Larry

Well I was able to get to the bike this afternoon after my mile long honey do list.  I took the side cover off and everything is secured and in place.  I could see the gear moving when I pull on the kick start lever and there is very little play when I pull on the spindle.  When I drained the oil I ran it through a 225 micron poly mesh paint filter and there was no debris in it.

I am truly not worried that the kick starter doesn't work as I will probably never use it.  My concern is that there might be some metal pieces floating around in the engine that could cause some damage.  I buttoned everything back up and tomorrow I think I will give it a go at starting the bike.

Made some brackets for the exhaust that fit a lot better and are easier to mount.  Buttoned everything up, attached the carb overflow tubes, hooked up an external fuel supply, and primed the carbs.  No leaks!

Next on the list is to refill with oil...check.

One last look over...and everything looks good.  Turn the key and thumb the starter.  With a few seconds...

SHE IS A RUNNER

The idle was high so I knocked it down as low as it would go...1500 RPM.  The adjustment screws no longer touch so I have to figure out how to drop the RPM's a bit.
I still have to set the timing, but I noticed the left exhaust pipe doesn't get nearly as hot as the right.  That worries me a bit since when I got it the left side wasn't running at all.  Hopefully it will be a simple timing issue, but with my luck it won't be.

You most likely need to give more slack to the throttle cable to cure the idle...

Harsh,to drop the idle possibly synch the throttle butterfly's and then fine tune synch the pilot screws;did you check your advance springs(I can't remember if you did when you assembled it..)and service the advancer unit? it needs to move smoothly and tight through it's full rotation, mine was worn and it affected the idle:made it roll a bit. How's your stroboscopic timing light settings  look ?

Took the left carb apart tonight.  Overall things looked good.  The o-rings were still nice and pliable, but I replaced them with the new stuff that was in the OEM kit that was in a box of parts I got when I bought the bike.  I couldn't get the emulsification tube with the slot out.  Someone has been in the carbs before because they busted one of the tabs off of it probably thinking it screwed in/out when they in reality just press in.  The only way I can see getting it out will damage it forcing me to replace it.

When I took out the slow jet it was clogged so I cleaned that out.  I cleaned out all of the passages and blew them out with compressed air.  I also noticed that a flat washer was not installed on the idle adjustment/mixture screw.  I looked at the right carb idle adjustment/mixture screw to see where it was set to and it was 2.5 turns out.  From what I have read the initial setting should be at 7/8 to 1 turn out so that is where I set it.

Tomorrow I will put everything back together.  Hopefully she will start and I can get the left cylinder to run and the idle to adjust correctly.

Bill...Just noticed your post was in the middle of the quoted section so I initially didn't see it.  I did away with the advancer unit when I installed a PAMCO electronic ignition.  I haven't set the timing yet with a timing gun because I couldn't get the idle down to where it should be.  I didn't want that to effect anything.

Pretty clean inside.

It is hard to see, but on the right gold piece you can see one side of the tab is missing.

All apart

Well good and bad.

I got everything back together and on the bike.  Fired it up and the RPM's jump to 3500 with the choke on.  If I remove the choke they jump up even higher.  I didn't look at what they were as I was reaching to turn the bike off.  There is zero pressure on the throttle cables and the idle screws aren't touching the pad.  The good news is that the left pipe got equally as hot as the right.  The bad, other than the lack of RPM adjustment, is that it is bypassing the jet I cleaned out so I don't know if I fixed that issue.

I have a lot of stuff to do tonight so I can't spend anymore time on it until next Monday.

Harsh,
I wonder if your pilot jet circuit might be feeding more fuel/air into the engine? or possibly your carb. butterflies aren't fully sealing ? My other guess would be the advancer being locked on full advance... just my 2 cents   ::)

Harsh,
Next time you operate the engine, get a feel for the movement of the kickstarter shaft:try pulling outward on it and then push it in to see if there is more movement than usual. The inner circlip on the inside end of the shaft where it meets up w/ your trans.may have popped off.I hope that didn't happen...,but if it did it would be best to replace it before it chews up some transmission parts while underway.
Better safe than sorry especially if it's for your wife.  ;)

Check the throttle cable , I'd bet the cables are not seated at the 1 into 2 junction

This is probably the one time my lower back problem has helped me.  Because of the pain I usually don't sleep past 2 or 2:30 in the morning.  When I wake up I just lay there flipping and flopping in the bed and my mind starts running.  It was then I had a thought.  When I put everything back together this last time I hooked up the throttle cables and in my mind I "backed them off" to put them at their loosest point.  Well in reality that put them at their tightest point.

I had 5 minutes before I had to go to work yesterday so I made a quick trip to the garage and adjusted the cables all the way in...now they are at their loosest.  Started it up and it didn't want to run until I adjusted the throttle stop screws a little bit.  She was purring at 1K and the pipes were getting equally hot.  So it appears I have the carb issue licked.

Love those easy fixes

They sure are nice.

Unfortunately, I am not sure when I will be able to get back to work on the bike.  My lower back has taken a turn for the worse.  The pain has now spread across the lower left side and into the front hip.  What really bothers me is that my left thigh is now numb.

Traction has relieved some pain in the past, but it always returns.  Pain meds do absolutely nothing for me.  I have taken just about every one there is in large doses and have had shots of morphine that have zero effect on me.  I saw the physical therapist this morning and she did a bunch of crap that hurt.  She did notice that my right leg is 3/4" shorter than my left.  In reality my right hip is tilted up about 3/4".
