1979 CB650 Oil filter housing
« on: May 29, 2014, 12:17:04 PM »
I purchased (what was said to be) a 1979 CB650 oil filter housing off eBay. What arrived was a housing with a shorter depth but same diameter as the original on my '79 CB650. Maybe off a CB550 or later CB650? No idea, clearly.

Would I have any issues using the smaller housing? The difference in depth is equal to the spacer that fits over the original bolt.

Also, this is my first post. Just wanted to say a quick "thanks" for all the info I've found on here prior to me joining.

Can you grab a measurement on external dimension for me? From alignment tab for housing to end fins on front.  I got my bike at work today so when I go for a break, I will measure that or grab some other easily referencial dims accessible from mount and I can get it instead.

Definitely. Won't be for a few more hours, though. Still at work.

Thanks!

Okie.  On break, got following compare info.  My bike is an 82 650 nigthawk.  Because of that engine parts are blacked meaning different part numbers.  Oil filter centre bolt is same part however so lengths should be same and use same honda internal parts.

Length i measured was curbside from machined mating surface where it mates to block up to end of fin on same side at 4 1/8 inch.

Did notice I am missing a filter part though when checking diagrams.  I do not have that internal collar...

4 1/8 would be the same as my original.

eBay item is a hair over 3 9/10.

Thanks for the measurements. Must've come off a smaller engine.

Came with a smaller bolt, so it mounts fine. I can't fit the spacer on the bolt, but with the smaller bolt I don't need it.

I can't come up with a reason not to run the smaller one. Just curious if there was something I wasn't thinking about.

Only thing I can think of might be oil getting a bit hotter if you have the proper space for oil flow.  The filter casing is essentially an oil cooler, but that slight distance difference, I cannot see it having an effect.  If same filter works, but no spacer, my guess is a 550.  I checked out it's parts diagram, and they have the same honda filter part number listed, but without the spacer.

My biggest concern would be if it blocks the external lines.  The 550 appears to have cast in the equal to a short spacer ring, so dry fit to make sure that the filter on the 650 cannot shift and block holes.  Easy to do by holding filter up to the bolt hole, and see if anything holds it clear.

It might be off a 83 dualcam.  They where shorter for the cooler adapter.  Ant you know all the 650's are the same. ;D
