Rebuilding Marzocchi rear shocks

I don't know if anyone else is running Marzocchi shocks on their CB's. I have a set on my 650, and a friend in Sweden who runs a motorcycle workshop, made this guide about how to rebuild them.

It is a slide show:

Fitting Fork Seals
« Reply #3 on: April 20, 2005, 12:28:11 AM »
The seal should be installed with the seal lip facing upward(out). If installed improperly, upside down or damaged during installation, the seal can leak. It is important that the seal be driven into the lower fork case perfectly aligned and fully seated against the stop. If the seal is installed even slightly cocked or deformed by excessive force, it will leak. The seal lip would be angled against the fork tube causing rapid wear and elongation. If the sealing lip is damaged by the slightest nick, it too will cause leakage. It is important that the seal be installed using pressure only on the outer perimeter of the seal without contacting the sealing lip. The taper from the outer edge of the seal to the center sealing lip should be facing up. As a rule, seals are usually installed with the seal number facing out when used in a blind opening.
(from Warlock)

If you have some bad spots on the forks or if you install the seals from the bottom up The following trick may help.
I take a roll of wax paper (like from the Kitchen) and put a piece around any area that may damage the seal as I am positioning it. Put a little fork oil (Automatic Trans Fluid?) on the wax paper and seal and slide it over the tricky parts.

Real Cheap Fork Boots
« Reply #5 on: July 23, 2005, 02:57:04 AM »
If you look in the Gallery (polishbeer), you will notice that the brand new fork boots on my decrepit CB500K-0 are NOT Honda items.  They are, in fact, from a company called "Rancho" and they are for aftermarket truck shocks.

Original Honda fork boots if you can get them, I believe run about $30.00 apiece.  I got these for $3.99 apiece from J.C. Whitney.  You can get them from most auto parts stores, or they can be ordered easily.  Rancho is a big brand name I guess.

The trick with these is that they have to be cut down a little top and bottom, and secured on the top with an 8" black cable tie, then snipped off flush so that it is virtually invisible at anything more than about a foot away.  The bottom, if cut clean and with enough space to spare, slips over the grooved part of the fork leg without any other means of securing it, so it looks pretty stock, too.  Unless you look closely, you can't really tell that they're not even for a motorcycle.  As long as you're not going for a concours restoration, who cares?

The Honda part I believe has 12 ribs along the fork boot.  When cut to size, these will have 11, aftrer removing two ribs (one on top and one on the bottom).  Also, since these are for a truck shock, they TAPER from one end to the other.  However, if you mount the wider part at the top, and cut carefully, even the taper is almost unnoticeable.

There you have it.

Progressive 12 Series Shocks from Motorcycle Warehouse - Part Numbers
« Reply #6 on: November 09, 2005, 03:20:57 AM »
Here's the skivvy.  I have a CB750 K4.  I am told by the Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse ( www.accwhse.com ) that the following shocks and springs work on 1969 to 1978 K models.  If you order by web or by phone, they want the so called manufacturer's number first, then they will track down their own assigned stock number.  But, it pays to have that number in advance so that you will be able to verify that the right product is being ordered.  A small side note here; the Warehouse manufacturer's number is not necessarily the same manufacturing number as what the manufacturer actually gives to their products.  OK? Progressive's number may not match what Warehouse says it is.

The 12 SERIES SHOCK ABSORBERS

Manufacturer No.  12204B ~~ (Black) ~~ 13" center of top eye to center of clevis bottom
Warehouse No.  16815
Note that Warehouse claims that Progressive no longer makes the Chrome version
Price right now - - $123.00 for a PAIR  ( On 11/08/05 )

SPRINGS

Manufacturer No.  031367B ~~ (Black) ~~ 95/140 Standard
Warehouse No.  16824
Price now - - 53.95 for a PAIR

Manufacturer No.  031368B ~~ (Black) ~~ 105/150 Heavy Duty
Warehouse No.  41701
Price now - - 53.95 for a PAIR

Manufacturer No.  031367C ~~ (Chrome) ~~ 95/140 Standard
Warehouse No.  41698
Price now - - 53.95 PAIR

Manufacturer No.  031368C ~~ (Chrome) ~~ 105/150 Heavy Duty
Warehouse No.  16815
Price now - - 53.95 PAIR

I should also say here that the numbers given above for ID's may not match the reference numbers at Tucker's reference sight.  They may be similar, but not an exact match.  Go by what the Warehouse says.

I bought the 12 Series Black shock absorbers ( though I wanted chrome, that model has been laid to rest ) with the Chrome Heavy Duty Springs.  I am very happy with them.

I hope this helps whomever may be looking into rear shocks and springs for their ride

~~jaknight

« Reply #7 on: November 21, 2005, 03:32:28 AM »
"cntrhub" has contributed the following 750SOHC 69-78 Fork Oil levels, taken from a factory Honda Service Specifications for all 1959-1980 US models.

Fork fluid oil are as follows:

CB750 K0, K1, K2 Dry: 220-230cc (7.5 - 7.8 oz.) Fill after drain: 200-210cc (6.9 - 7.1 oz.).

CB750 K3, K4, K5, 76 Dry: 155-160cc (5.3 - 5.4 oz.) Fill after drain: 135-140cc (4.6 - 4.7 oz.).

CB750K-77 Dry: 155cc (5.3 oz.) Fill after drain: 145cc (4.9 oz.).

CB750K-78: 150cc (5.1 oz.) Note: Does not say dry or fill. My guess is: Fill after drain.

Re: Suspension & Forks FAQ
« Reply #9 on: October 05, 2014, 05:28:04 PM »
I am in the need of something more attractive that the stock top triple tree from a GL 1000. I am building a 750 café with Drouin blower. While the bike is go and show I need something better looking than the stock.

Thank you
